Topic:- How to Grow Ornamental Crops.

Behavioural Objectives:-

At the end of the lesson the lesson the students should be able to:-
1. Define ornamental crops; and
2 List and explain at least four (4) Steps involved in growing ornamental plants;

A flip chart showing different types of ornamental plants or crops.

Introduction:

Ornamental plants beautifies and make our surroundings pleasant, help to protect the soil, provide shade and purify the air we breathe.

Presentation:-

Step 1:- Definition of Ornamental crops.

Ornamental crops are flowers and trees that are grown to make our surroundings beautiful and pleasant. They help to protect the soil, provide shade and purify the air we breathe. Example include Flamboyant tree, Sunflower, Rose, Pride of Barbados and Hibiscus plant.

The following steps are involved in growing ornamental plants.

(a). Choice of site:- The soil must be sandy loam or clayey loam and well-drained. The soil must have a good ability to hold water.

(b). Land clearing:- The land must be cleared of weed, stumps from cut trees and debris before planting. Land clearing can be done using hoes and machetes.

(c). Seedbed/pot preparation:-Seed beds should be well made and arranged with top soil. Seed pots should be filled with rich soil.

(d). Planting:-
Ornamental plants are raised as seeds in the nursery. The seeds grow seedlings which are transplanted to flower beds or pots.

(e). Weeding:-
Weeding is the removal of unwanted plants. It should be done regularly with the use of hoe in seed beds. In the seed pots or boxes, it is usually done by uprooting unwanted plants with the hands.

(f). Manuring:- This is the application of manure or fertilizer to the flower beds or the soil in flower pots. Manure makes the flowers to have good growth.

(g). Watering:- This should be dome regularly especially during the dry season. Watering is dine a Watering can, hand bowl, bucket or perforated tin. Watering is usually done late in the evening or early in the morning. It should be done in a careful manner so that the soil will not be waterlogged.

(h). Mulching during dry season:- This is the covering of the surface of the surface of the flower beds or flower pots with materials like dry leaves, stems, and dry grasses to reduce water loss from the soil by the sun. This is very essential during dry season.

(I). Pruning:-
This is the cutting of overgrown flower branches, stems and leaves. This is done with the use of shears or secateurs. Pruning or trimming of flowers should be done regularly to make the flowers attractive.

Evaluation:-

The teacher ask the students questions to ascertain the level of their understanding:-

1. Define ornamental crops; and
2 List and explain at least four (4) Steps involved in growing ornamental plants.

Homework:-

1. Cut and paste five(5) ornamental crops.
2. Why should plants be watered late in the night or early in the morning?
3. What is the function of the dry leaves and dry grasses on the flower pots or flower bed surfaces?
4. Draw a secateurs or shear.
