Behavioural Objectives:-
At the end of the lesson the lesson the students should be able to:-
1. Give the meaning of farm produce processing; and
2. List the different processes of processing some farm product.
Previous knowledge:-
Some of students have parents that process some of this farm product and make a living from it like the Pap known as Ogi gotten from corn(maize).
Instructional Material(s):-
Flip chat showing the different methods of processing farm product.
Introduction:
Most of the farm produce we eat has been processed or made in the factory in some way. Anything that is processed is not fresh; foods we buy in packages like flour, biscuits, breads, milk, sugar butter, drinks, frozen and tinned foods are all processed from farm produce.
Presentation:-
Step 1:- Meaning of Farm Produce Processing.
Farm produce processing is the process of turning harvested, raw or fresh farm produce into a form that can be eaten, stored or preserved.
Step 2:- Ways of processing farm produce.
The ways of processing farm produce include; peeling, shelling, grinding, frying, baking, milling, drying in the sun etc.
1. Processing of yam tubers to yam flour called "Elubo":-
Yam tubers are peeled, parboiled, dried in the sun, milled by machine into yam flour and packaged.
2. Processing of maize pap "Ogi":-
Maize grains are shelled, soaked for 2-3 days in water if the maize fruits are fresh, milled, served and packaged to get pap "Ogi".
3. Processing of Cassava to Cassava flour "Garri":-
Cassava tubers are peeled, washed, ground, pressed with a pressing machine to remove poisonous water and fried into Cassava flour called "Garri"
Evaluation:-
The teacher ask the students questions to ascertain the level of their understanding:-
1. Give the meaning of farm produce processing; and
2. List the different processes of processing some farm product.
Homework:-
1. List two farm produce and the process involve in processing each of them.
2. List three (3) importance of Farm produce processing.
