Behavioural Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should know how to prevent communicable diseases and the control measure.

Previous Knowledge: The student should have a knowledge of diseases that spreads in their environment.

Instructional Material: A drawing of someone in a chart who has any of communicable diseases.

Step 1: What are Communicable Diseases?

Communicable Diseases are those disease that spreads from one person to another through a variety of ways that includes; contact with blood and bodily fluids, breathing in an airborne virus or been bitten by an insect.

Step 2: Ways communicable diseases spread

  1. Physical contact with an infected person such as through touch, sexual intercourse or droplets from the infected person.
  2. Contact with a contaminated surface or object.
  3. Bites from insect or animals capable of transmitting the disease.

Step 3: Examples of communicable diseases

Here are examples of communicable diseases we know.

  1. Ebola
  2. Tuberculosis
  3. Rabies
  4. Chicken pox
  5. Measles
  6. HIV/AIDS
  7. Whooping cough
  8. Gonorrhea
  9. Strep throat
  10. Hepatitis
  11. Flu
  12. Covid-19

Step 4: Prevention and Control Measure

  1. Implementing good hand washing procedures.
  2. Social distancing
  3. Avoid sharing personal items.
  4. Implementing case isolation and effective treatment.
  5. Ongoing health education relating to disease prevention and hygiene measures.
  6. Enforcing immunization laws and practicing universal precautions / blood pathogen procedures.

Evaluation: To ascertain the level of the pupils, the teacher should ask the pupils the following;

  1. Examples of communicable diseases they know or have seen in their environment.

Homework:

  1. What are communicable diseases?
  2. Mention two ways through which one can spread or get communicable disease.
  3. List five examples of communicable diseases.
  4. List three preventive and control measures.
