Behavioural Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to identify a weed.

Previous Knowledge:
To help the learners in this study, the teacher will ask the learners if they've ever seen a plant grow in their farm that was not planted.

Instructional Materials:
A weed chart

Step 1: What is a Weed?
A Weed is a plant that is growing where it is not wanted by man. It is not planted but grows by itself among the planted crops. It spreads by itself from one portion of the farm to the other.

A weed is a plant's pest. It disturbs the proper growth of the desired plants. Some weeds grow on the water surface.

Weeds prevent planted crops from yielding fruits properly. Some weeds are so dangerous that they can affect and change the proper taste and odour of the desired plant crop.

It occupies the place where the planted crop should have occupied and shares the soil nutrients with the planted crops. Weeds destroy crops.

Step 2: Common Weeds

Some common weeds includes the following:-

  1. Elephant grass
  2. Lemon grass
  3. Creeping thistles
  4. Carpet grass
  5. Tares
  6. Tridax
  7. Guinea grass
  8. Lalang
  9. Bahama grass
  10. Wild sunflower

Step 3: CONTROL MEASURES

  1. Biological Method:
    This involves the use of natural weed killer examples like the animals are allowed to graze on the land.

  2. Cultural Method:
    under the cultural method is the use of
    a. Crop rotation
    b. Fallowing

3.Mechanical Method:
Under this method, the weeds can be uprooted or pulled out from the soil with the use of hands, matchets, hoes or other machines.
a. by ploughing
b. by mowing
c. by burning

4.Chemical Method:
Chemicals that destroy weeds are used. These chemicals are applied as dust or sprays. they attack an destroy weeds only. They are called HERBICIDES.

Evaluation:
To ascertain their level of understanding, the teacher will ask the learners, to identify each weeds given to them.

  1. What is weed?
  2. Mention some common weeds in our environment.
  3. Mention the control measures against weeds.
  4. Get a card board and find some common weeds in your environment and do a weed chart.
