Multi Purposeful Laptops For Work, Play, Online Meetings, Education & Entertainment

Hi there. This post is an overview on how the laptop is a very nice and modern multi purpose tool for work, play, online meetings, education and entertainment.

Laptops back in the day used to be for really technical people for really technical tasks. Nowadays, a large majority of people use laptops for work, school, playing PC games, online communications, music, videos and for education. Even though they are not as powerful to their desktop counterparts, laptops are much more popular as they are very portable. Some of the 15 inch screen laptops are getting lighter and more portable these days.

With the COVID-19 lockdown, laptops have gained greater importance as (some) workplaces are adopting remote work options. Many schools are adapting to online versions of their education delivery. More people during this lockdown have more "free time" and are using this time for possible career changes through online education platforms from Youtube, Udemy, Coursera, etc.

Laptops For Work

Laptops (and desktop computers) allow for remote work while being away from the workplace. Being able to work remotely is attractive to those who do not want to commute so much and/or for those who want to take care of their kids as well. (Remote work is better than no work during the lockdown period.) In remote jobs that require social interactions, the quality of social interactions online is generally not as good as in person. But hey, some interaction is better than none. Video and audio sharing platforms such as Zoom allows for online meetings for sharing and exchanging ideas and information.

Laptops For Education

Many schools are adopting technology in the classroom. It is becoming common to see homework problems, notes and assignments being posted online. Some assignments require submission of files through the internet.

If you are in university or college, having a laptop is pretty much a "survival tool" for completing educational tasks. On top of having a laptop being able to do computer tasks such as e-mailing colleagues/teachers/professors, typing out resumes, typing fast, creating charts and presentations can be considered base requirements for school.

Online Learning

The education field is quite massive these days with technological advances and new alternative learning websites and platforms. Online learning is great for those unable to physically make it to classrooms, learning something not offered at a local school/institution or for those for more competitively priced educational programs/courses versus costly university programs (in the USA and to a lesser extent Canada). Many online courses would require a laptop for completing exercises through typing and possibly computer programming.

Laptops For Play & Entertainment

For leisure time, laptops are great for play and entertainment. Laptops have more than enough computing power for watching Youtube videos and streaming video content. It is often a good idea to try to save videos offline when possible on a laptop just in case internet access is not available.

When it comes to gaming, higher-end laptops are capable of gaming. It is better to do gaming on a desktop PC at home as it is more powerful than a laptop. Also, gaming wears out the laptop battery quite fast.

On a side note, many DJs (disk jockeys) do use laptops for playing music during their live music events at clubs, festivals, studios instead of vinyl turntables and CD turntables. High end laptops are also used by music producers who are on the go with playing at events and music production.

A Content Creation & Income Generating Machine

For some professions and businesses, people cannot do business and generate revenue without a laptop (desktop) computer. No laptop computing can mean:

  • No online meetings
  • No computer programming
  • No online tutoring
  • No/limited access to online education
  • No blogging and travelling
  • Limited ways to deal with cryptocurrencies
  • No music production
  • No remote working
  • No video blogs.

A Job Hunting Tool

Gone are the days of submitting applications with paper. Paperless is the modern normal and job applications are done online. A computer is essential for typing and designing resumes, cover letters, networking with people, sending e-mails, doing programming skills tests during a hiring process and doing video interviews.

Notes

Laptops (and desktop computers) are essential products as they provide so much utility in the modern developed world. (I would argue that computers are more important than televisions!) It would be difficult to do well in your career and in connecting with others without a laptop.

Do make sure that files are protected and backed up. Avoid damaging laptops with silly water spills and the like.

Laptop prices do vary based on computer specifications, the year that it is made, screen size, brand and build. Those who do basic web browsing, e-mail and Youtube could manage with a budget laptop. Students who do computer programming often would find spending more money on a good laptop to be worth the money. Professionals who need top notch computer specifications should spend top dollar for a high end laptop for resource hungry tasks.
