Generosity becomes a virtue of giving to the extent that it exceeds the love of which a person is capable. Generosity is a classical virtue rather than a Christian one. It belongs more to morality than to ethics. This establishes both its limitations and its greatness. You cannot force yourself to love; you can tell yourself to be generous. Love does not depend on us (we depend on it); generosity depends on us.
