How should be the previous preparation to start the study of calculus?

This post is intended for the general public, however it is of special interest to all those students who are beginning their studies at the university, especially if their aspirations are to study engineering and/or science.

From my own experience I can tell you that when I was a student in my college years studying petroleum engineering I found it somewhat complicated to have to learn calculus, however after I really made some adjustments to avoid making some mistakes that are very common when studying calculus resulted that the experience of learning calculus ended up being one of the most stimulating experiences in the educational field that I have had as a student and as an educator.

In order for my experience as a student to have been satisfactory and for my experience as a teacher to continue to be stimulating, it is important for students to be able to assume the need to have some previous knowledge before beginning the study of calculus at the university level.

There are a number of subjects that are the fundamental basis that facilitate the learning of calculus, these subjects that the student must master to obtain a significant learning about calculus at university level are: algebra, analytical geometry and trigonometry, specific properties of real numbers, among other topics that are also of interest.

How do we really know what subjects we need to learn before starting calculus?

Logically, the subjects mentioned above may seem very few, however, as the student enters the study of calculus and wants to refine their learning, the same lack of knowledge that is needed to fix their knowledge of calculus will speak for itself which are the subjects that are needed to successfully learn infinitesimal calculus.

Another important variable that the student must assume to have a good learning of calculus is to be willing to have a visualization through graphs that can be elaborated by himself by hand or using computerized software with the objective of having a broader vision of calculus and that not everything is reduced to simple arithmetic, algebra and geometry.

Conclusion

In the good concept of the word studying calculus is like going to for war, that is to say it is preferable to have more than enough than not enough, the more is your previous knowledge that is the basis of calculus is much better, if apart from what I have mentioned in this post you can add other variables that are important to learn as prior knowledge before starting the study of calculus is better.
