Mental Struggles with Perfectionism and How Posting Regularly on Hive Helps 📝

avatar
(Edited)

I've been absent from Hive - except for those occasional pop ups with an upvote here and there - for some time and I did miss posting regularly and making connections here. I even missed posting about my one (1) year anniversary here on Hive on September 12th, which I don't mind because I'm not so big on dates. I was even late for my 6 months anniversary 😅, but that's besides the point.

Though I don't owe anyone an explanation, I would like to disclose why I wasn't as active as I was before, because I want to share an experience with you. The thing is, I had to pass my last "class" (wasn't that much in class), which consisted of me doing a little field research (survey), hitting the books and writing a report. It was the writing part that took a lot of time, even though I had enough practice from Hive.

My preface, introduction and the questionnaire were finished for a while and even the responses were in, still I had trouble starting, let alone finishing the report. The thing is, I'm a perfectionist, I overthink and am really hard on myself; only want to turn in the best quality work that I could have. I've been like that for as long as I remember.

When writing essays when I was younger, I had to constantly reread, rethink and rewrite sentences and/or paragraphs, which cost me a lot of time. The same happened when I started here on Hive. I spend way too much time on one post alone, which over time did get a bit easier. This was because of finding a rhythm and system that worked for me and the consistency of posting.

Being consistent and trying to show up everyday - getting into the habit of posting and engaging - on Hive was what helped me to curb that type-a personality of me. It doesn't have to be perfect I reminded myself, I just needed to write something down. Only when I was done, could I work on correcting and finalizing the report.

I met the deadline - after a few weeks of sleepless nights - of turning in the report and passed 💃. Now I'm slowly getting back on Hive and am truly grateful of the experiences and lessons learned, because of posting here regularly. This goes to show some of the added value of this blockchain: not only earning by being active, but also learning and relearning skills outside of Hive. Not to mention overcoming some habits that have held me back. Am still learning.

How about you, has Hive helped you flourish in the physical world outside? 🤓

Congratulation on meeting the deadline and passing the report you had to do! It would be good we all learn how to write more efficiently, faster, without rereading all the time the already written stuff, but not lower the expectations of the desired level. :)

P.S. congrats too for your first anniversary, with a bit of delay :D

Hahaha thank you and it's indeed a (small) win; celebrate every win/progress 💪.

Yup, working on that everyday. Let's work towards improving everyday! 💪

Yes, why not celebrate the small steps too? But being consistent and present here for one year is not a small step! It is a nice success!!!! 🤗

Actually I find blogging quite hard. Most of the time I just force myself to do it by following a template and filling in the gaps. Thinking of something fresh is quite difficult.

You have done well, and I'm sure you will continue creating great posts...

Thank you and I try my best 😊.
You know, it is hard... Especially coming up with ideas. I also use templates, so I have a "guideline" in what my posts should look like.

Also what helps is to keep an (online) spreadsheet with all of my ideas, because we can't control when or where we get inspired. So whenever I get inspired in the car or doing chores or watching videos or reading other blogs, I type my idea in. I may sometimes be inspired but don't have the energy to write it, so I'll use those topics for especially those days I don't know what to write about.

Does this seem like something you could try?

Hello, and welcome back, happy to see you here. You won't believe me, but I just thought of these issues with my life here at Hive. Because I too have stopped posting for weeks and only come in for my curatorial work and such. But I have very neglected the part of my content, something that has been going around in my head is the procrastination that is born out of wanting to perfect something, in this case content. I have been absent for a long time and this has caused me anxiety.

Reading this at least gives me encouragement and motivates me to keep fighting against perfectionism. Also because in my personal life I am going through a period of change and this has had a big impact on my work.

But little by little I am recovering and it is good to read friends on hive and see them back. Thanks for this post, I loved it. Blessings 🙏

But I have very neglected the part of my content, something that has been going around in my head is the procrastination that is born out of wanting to perfect something, in this case content. I have been absent for a long time and this has caused me anxiety.

I so recognize this... Not only happening with Hive, but also in writing my report and other work. I have an idea in my head what I want and what it should look like and then I second guess or third or fourth guess and then because of the back and forth I haven't started with something. Then I close off and anxiety kicks in.

Reading this at least gives me encouragement and motivates me to keep fighting against perfectionism. Also because in my personal life I am going through a period of change and this has had a big impact on my work.

I hope all is well.
And this is the reason why I found it important to write this experience of mine, because I knew from other experiences that I couldn't be the only one going through this. So I hoped that my story could at least help others going through the same, see that they're not alone.

I also missed your posts by the way. I also remember some strong words of encouragement or wise lessons learned coming from you.

Hope to see you're posts again soon. No pressure 😉😊.

Bless up! 🙏

Yes. Hive has put me out there in ways I would never imagined. Ideas flow in my head easily and i read the news more often (big feat right there). I also look forward to discovering new things.

I also look forward to discovering new things.

That's beautiful and you know, since Hive I let myself be inspired by almost everything around me. When listening to the radio, reading (news) articles, other's blogs, watching videos, documentaries, etc. Even conversations with others and of course when I look around me.

...and i read the news more often (big feat right there).

I would like to know why you said it's a "big feat", but that's me being nosey hahaha 😅.

I wasn't much into news until I got a bit older and into the workforce and now it's dimmed down because of a lot of negativity, but I do still follow it regularly; a few times a week. But not so daily anymore.

It is a big feat because i couldn't even bring myself to sit infront of a Television with news for like two minutes. I never wanted anything about it. But guess what? I found out through hive that not all news is bad. Most are inspirational and totally God send. And just like you said, i get inspired by anything around me. It's like a breath of fresh air to maximize my passion without feeling an iota of stress. ❤️

I experience the same. That's why when I don't have time for Hive, because of other responsibilities, I miss it.

Ah, that sounds relatable. What I sometimes do is when I'm doing household work, I listen to the news, so that I don't only focus on that part. Those are then the times I let some news in, without letting it weigh me down.

Reading your post ..... and all the comments .... has inspired me to put forth an effort to try blogging. I'm new to Hive and to how this all works. I'm having anxiety about introducing myself and what to talk bout. It's a real struggle for some people and it's comforting to learn how others maneuver through life's little obstacles. Glad you met your deadline and found your why back here.

Hi @lollipopred I must have missed your message, which is why I'm only now replying.

Being anxious and finding it hard to approach people or connecting with them sounds so familiar to me, although I've had enough practice. Especially if I don't know anyone or some but then not well enough.
What helped me a lot was me joining a few social and volunteer organizations.

There was this one time, I had to recruit chess and checkers players from my faculty for an inter university week of sports and I knew no one who played those two types of sports. I really had to get over that threshold and approach fellow students and asked them for their time and if I could ask them a few questions. After a few people it got way easier. Every time I did this I realized "people may look scary, but they aren't all that bad" 😅.

All the best and hope to see some of your blogs soon and who knows maybe even your vlogs 😉!
