Greetings friends addicted to science! Today we are going to dive into the world of mosquitoes and learn a little more about them! For this post I collected stagnant water with some small mosquito larvae and stored it for a few days to complete the cycle and see an adult! You probably didn't know that the correct way to identify them is with the "siphon" of the larva? join me in this little experiment!!🧠📚
Something curious about the larvae of the cuculidae, which are the family of insects that mosquitoes group, is that the way they swim is almost always vertical. If you had not noticed this behavior, I invite you to observe the larvae when they are in a state of "rest". , but there is a scientific explanation for this behavior! What happens is that mosquito larvae do not have "neither gills nor lungs" so where do they carry out gas exchange? To answer this we must first see the anatomy of the larvae...👩🏫📚🧠
What is the siphon?🕵️♂️🦟/ Que es el sifon??🙇♂️📚
The relationship between why the larva is positioned vertically with its head down has its explanation due to the siphon, the siphon is a structure found in the abdomen of the larva and through which the larva can carry out gas exchange I mean "breathe", this is a very interesting adaptation mechanism of these insects since they can not only survive clean stagnant water but also contaminated water with very little dissolved oxygen! When you depend on external oxygen, the physical-chemical conditions of the water do not matter! interesting, right??😲😲
A bit about your anatomy🕵️♂️🦟/ Un poco sobre su anatomia🙇♂️📚
Here we see a larva in its fourth phase, after this phase comes the pupa that gives rise to the adult! This growth period lasts for an average of 20 days, the larva phase lasts between 7-14 days depending on environmental factors and water conditions, the larva is normally deposited in shallow bodies of water since they they need to be close to the surface for "breathing", it moves with serpentine movements! and it is quite sensitive to changes in light intensity, if it sees any change in light, it runs away looking for depth!🦟🧠📚

We can see that the morphology of the larva is arranged in three parts: (head, thorax and abdomen), the abdomen is made up of a total of 8 segments that have bristles on the sides, in this case lateral bristles, the siphon bristles They are called: bristles of the siphon, also the thorax has bristles! that help you capture stimuli in the water let's say they are sensory structures since your vision is too poor! what makes mosquitoes fantastic is that when environmental conditions are "extreme" the larva and eggs can take months to grow!👩🏫📚🧠
How are they identified?🕵️♂️🦟/ Como se identifican??🙇♂️📚
Few know, but the correct and most effective way to identify a species of mosquito is by observing its abdomen, when we compare the siphon and the excretory structure where we find the anal sclerite, both structures vary depending on the genus despite not being able to exactly identify the species with the larva we can determine what is the genus of mosquito that forms into an adult!🧠📚📚
With a comparative illustrative image and a little practice we can identify the genera of mosquitoes! This species that I captured is Aedes rusticus. This European species is common between the months of May and August. I was surprised to get it in winter, this gives us an idea of how resistant they are! Like other mosquitoes, only the "females bite", they normally lay their eggs in ponds and when conditions are favorable, the eggs are born at the height of spring normally! they need to bite a mammal to obtain the necessary proteins that allow them to lay eggs!😲📚🧠

adult🕵️♂️🦟/ adulto🙇♂️📚
This is not the best time of the year for the larvae to pass to their last phase, however I got an adult with a complete thorax and head! The first thing you notice is a great "anatomical evolution in their eyes" similar to the eyes of flies. Adult mosquitoes have developed eyes with better vision, according to studies they can detect objects 10 meters away! but like all insects, they lack good vision!😲🧠
When i see those things jumping in the water i know that there is trouble in there thanks for the amazing description

Wow..
Being on he other end of fighting these mosquitoes 😡 and the diseases that can cause in us humans and reading this makes me crack up in lady. Look at how feeble they appear to be and how they can make the high and lofty sick.
And to think that this was my discussion with my last patient today, she came with kids so I made it into an interesting story. How the father sings while the mother mosquito eats to lay eggs.
This is a beautiful post and thanks for sharing.
