Greetings friends addicted to science! Today we are going to dive into the world of mosquitoes and learn a little more about them! For this post I collected stagnant water with some small mosquito larvae and stored it for a few days to complete the cycle and see an adult! You probably didn't know that the correct way to identify them is with the "siphon" of the larva? join me in this little experiment!!🧠📚

Saludos amigos adictos a la ciencia! hoy vamos a sumerginos dentro del mundo de los mosquitos y aprender un poco mas sobre ellos! para este post recolecte agua estancada con algunas larvas pequeñas de mosquitos y la deje almacenada algunos dias para completar el ciclo y poder ver un adulto! probablemente no sabias que la forma correcta para identificarlos es con el "sifon" de la larva?? acompañame en este pequeño experimento!!🦟👩‍🏫🕵️‍♂️💧

Por que nadan en posicion vertical??🕵️‍♂️🦟/ Why do they swim upright?🙇‍♂️📚

Something curious about the larvae of the cuculidae, which are the family of insects that mosquitoes group, is that the way they swim is almost always vertical. Algo curioso de las larvas de los cuculidae que son la familia de insectos que agrupan los mosquitos es que la forma de nado es casi siempre en vertical, si no habias notado ese comportamiento te invito a observar las larvas cuando estan en estado de "reposo", pero existe una explicacion cientifica para este comportamiento! lo que sucede es que las larvas de mosquitos no tienen "ni branqueas, ni pulmones" entonces por donde realizan el intercambio gaseoso? para responder esto primero debemos ver la anatomia de las larvas...🦟🦟

La relacion entre el porque la larva se posiciona en sentido vertical con la cabeza hacia abajo tiene su explicacion debido al sifon, el sifon es una estructura que se encuentra en el abdomen de la larva y que mediante a el la larva puede realizar el intercambio gaseoso osea "respirar", este es un mecanismo de adaptacion muy interesante de estos insectos ya que no solo pueden sobrevivir a agua estancada limpia si no tambien agua contaminada con muy poco oxigeno disuelto! cuando dependes del oxigeno exterior no importa las condiciones fisico-quimicas del agua! interesante no??💨💨

Aqui vemos una larva en su cuarta fase, a seguir de esta fase viene la pupa que da origen al adulto! este periodo de crecimiento tiene una duracion de un promedio de 20 dias, la fase de larva tiene una duracion de entre 7-14 dias dependiendo los factores ambientales y las condiciones del agua, la larva normalmente se deposita en cuerpos de agua poco profundos ya que necesitan estar cerca de la superficie para la "respiracion", se mueve con movimientos serpentinos! y es bastante sensible a cambios en la intensidad luminica si observa algun cambio en la luz huye buscando la profundidad!👩‍🏫🕵️‍♂️👨‍🎓

Podemos ver que la morfologia de la larva se dispone en tres partes: (cabeza, torax y abdomen), el abdomen esta compuesto por un total de 8 segmentos que hacia los lados se disponen cerdas, en este caso cerdas laterales, las cerdas del sifon son llamadas: cerdas del sifon, tambien el torax presentan cerdas! que le ayudan a captar estimulos en el agua digamos que son estructuras sensoriales ya que su vision es demasiado pobre! lo que hace fantastico a los mosquitos es que cuando las condiciones ambientales son "extremas" la larva y huevos pueden demorar meses en crecer!🧠📚👩‍🏫👨‍🎓

Pocos saben pero la forma correcta y mas eficaz de identificar una especie de mosquito es observando su abdomen, cuando comparamos el sifon y la estructura excretora donde encontramos el esclerito anal, ambas estructuras varian dependiendo el genero apesar de no poder identificar exactamente la especie con la larva podemos determinar cual es el genero de mosquito que se forma en adulto!😲😲

Con una imagen ilustrativa comparativa y un poco de practica podemos identificar los generos de los mosquitos! esta especie que capture es Aedes rusticus esta especie europea es comun entre los meses de mayo a agosto, me sorprendio conseguirla en altura de invierno esto nos da una idea de lo resistente que son! al igual que otro mosquito solo las "hembras pican", normalmente coloca sus huevos en estanques y cuando las condiciones son favorables nacen los huevos a la altura de primavera normalmente! necesitan picar un mamifero para obtener las proteinas necesarias que les permitan colocas huevos!😲👩‍🏫🦟🧫🔬🩸

This is not the best time of the year for the larvae to pass to their last phase, however I got an adult with a complete thorax and head! The first thing you notice is a great "anatomical evolution in their eyes" similar to the eyes of flies. Adult mosquitoes have developed eyes with better vision, according to studies they can detect objects 10 meters away! but like all insects, they lack good vision!😲🧠
esta no es la mejor altura del año para las larvas pasar a su ultima fase sin embargo consegui un adulto con su torax y cabeza completa! lo primero que notas es una gran "evolucion anatomica en sus ojos" parecido a los ojos de las moscas los mosquitos en su adultes tienen ojos desarrollados con una mejor vision, segun estudios pueden detectar objetos a 10 metros de distancias! pero como todo insecto carece de una buena vision! 🩸🔬

Diseases?🕵️‍♂️🦟/ Enfermedades¿?🙇‍♂️📚

The Aedes rusticus species is not known to transmit dangerous diseases to mammals, aside from infections from bites, the most dangerous mosquito of all is Aedes aegypti which does cause deadly diseases in humans including malaria and yellow fever! the other dangerous species is Culex. Therefore there are no records of any significant danger to humans from Aedes rusticus.🩸🕵️‍♂️
La especie Aedes rusticus no es conocido por transmitir enfermedades peligrosas a mamiferos, dejando aun lado infecciones por la picaduras, el mosquito mas peligroso de todos es Aedes aegypti que si causa enfermedades mortales en el ser humano incluyendo la malaria y fiebre amarilla! la otra especie peligrosa es Culex. Por tanto no hay registros de alguno peligro significativo para los humanos por parte de Aedes rusticus.🤢🤒😷

Wow..
Being on he other end of fighting these mosquitoes 😡 and the diseases that can cause in us humans and reading this makes me crack up in lady. Look at how feeble they appear to be and how they can make the high and lofty sick.

And to think that this was my discussion with my last patient today, she came with kids so I made it into an interesting story. How the father sings while the mother mosquito eats to lay eggs.
