A Different Perspective

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas! I love this festive season and I believe it isn't too early to start having contest themed Christmas. This week would be something pretty interesting. Something out of the box I would say. There will be a little twist in this Christmas story. A different perspective. Instead of writing about how family gathers, or about a child's wishes, I would like to challenge the ever-creative people of the Powerhousecreatives to write a story from the gift's perspective.

As a gift, what have you gone through to reach your destination? What got you picked by the customer? What gift are you? What is your purpose being bought on Christmas day?

The shop keeper and his wife were always about, helping their patrons with selections and bickering quietly when they thought no one was listening. I started life as a weird looking little seed in the sub-tropical Bushveld of Southern Africa. Many of the other seeds that laid beside me in the shade of the woodland would tease me, saying I looked like a brown papery fried egg!

I however hail from a proud family called Fabaceae; our bloodline has a real fancy Latin name Pterocarpus angolensis, but we have all adopted common names like Kiaat, Bloodwood, Paddle-wood, Sealing-wax tree, Wild Teak or Transvaal Teak. My family name simply is Kiaat...

I was not originally meant to be a gift; at first I was intended as a useful kitchen tool and I was excited about helping bake my first pie and taste my first cake. I was first bought by a happy, older couple who were so excited that they had found the perfect gift: me! They took me home and wrapped me up in a bright red package. I could already imagine being opened and seeing children at Christmastime, and then singing and dancing and laughing around the kitchen while we whipped up all sorts of sweet goodies together...

My first conscious thought was brightness, before tumbling down into a darkness with dozens like me.

The next time I saw that brightness again, a man was in front of me. He lifted me high up and placed me right next to the others that looked like me.

We were joking around that we had a great life, we didn’t have to work or shed a light on anything. But yesterday that bald man who works here and drives through the the warehouse all day picking orders, came for me and my brother today!

At home we were a very big family, my mother had 12 children and I was the number 11 of them. I remember that in the month of December all my older brothers and sisters who lived for work in Caracas, the capital of the country, arrived. They always arrived with a lot of bags and suitcases and in them there was always something special for the children of the house and everything turned into a party from the moment we stopped until we went to bed.
