It's incredible, we are consuming more and more multimedia files, technology, computing resources. We have reached a point where there is no turning back. It seems even ironic but the powerful equipment that comes out today is already "obsolete" the next day. It's never enough, we always want more.

Of course, there is no fair comparison between today's digital products and those of a few years ago. The quality with which we see videos, images is amazing and therefore the size of these files has increased considerably. Not to mention how much a last generation game occupies, it's crazy really. All this has a positive impact on the user experience because "everything looks nicer", more fluid. This of course has a cost. We are talking about the need for a more robust infrastructure to support all this digital traffic, we are talking about the need for more powerful disks to store and manage information.

In addition to the broad demand for storage, we are also seeing the effects of another phenomenon: "USBfication". A term I've made up to say that everything is being brought to the ease of "plug and play". Before, connecting peripherals to your PC was somewhat "complicated" or rather, there was no such quick way to do it without having so much technical knowledge or having the necessary adapters/interfaces.

You can't imagine the headaches of connecting a camera, a microphone, a musical instrument, to a computer a few years ago. Now everything (or almost everything) has USB connectivity which is a marvel for all the time it saves. So - what's the problem?

Just like storage, the amount of USB ports is a very limited physical factor and now even more so since almost any device can be connected this way, but even worse, the "essential" peripherals are not only the mouse and keyboard, many times we have to figure out how to make the available ports work.

I am telling you all this because in my day to day life I have come across these two situations a lot: "lack of storage" and "lack of USB ports".

It can be said that they are two technically distinct but closely related issues.

Now, in previous posts I had told you that my laptop came by default with 256 GB of M.2 storage. The M.2 drive is the evolution of solid state drives (SSD) which allow you to achieve mind-blowing read and write speeds not to mention that they are extremely small compared to traditional mechanical drives. That's all well and good but 256GB is almost nothing if you're handling heavy files. That's why I had bought a 1TB SSD to solve that situation.

To my surprise the laptop despite having the port to connect the SSD did not have the adapter/flexor. Finding this part is a bit of a hassle. To my luck, a friend needed a SSD and since it was not going to be useful to me I decided to sell it to him and with that money I completed to buy a 1TB M.2. These disks are connected by PCI port and my laptop having an available slot everything was perfect.

Transferring files from my main M.2 to the M.2 storage is lightning fast and if you move files internally the transfer is almost instantaneous.

In the first test I did the speed was pretty poor and I was surprised because it was supposed to be in the order of Gigas per second but after a few transfers it started to perform as it should, I guess it was gaining momentum lol.

Here are some screenshots of how I transfer files from the default M.2 on the laptop to the M.2 I added to it.

IMG_20220903_175026.jpg

The storage was solved, with a theoretical capacity of 1.256 TB is more than fine (for now) although it is necessary to mention that each of these M.2 are reserved a few Gigas so the total capacity is somewhat lower but still more than enough.

I was already calm about that part but, the other threat was still bothering me. The number of USB ports on my laptop are 3 and one type C which I use very little. 3 ports is almost nothing really, when connecting the mouse, keyboard and microphone I run out of capacity and if I need to connect the cell phone, the camera or a pendrive the thing gets very uncomfortable. I always ended up juggling but it got to the point where I said ENOUGH.

I bought a USB Hub, specifically the Inateck HB2025A. It has 4 Type A 3.2 Gen 2 ports. The ports are only for connecting devices, it does not support charging. The transfer rate of each slot is 10 Gbps, a complete barbarity.

This modest device solved those headaches for me. To be honest, this is one of my proudest purchases.

I now have two free ports on my PC and one on the hub. I regret not buying one with more ports but in practical terms I don't need to connect more stuff, who knows maybe in the future I will decide to buy one with more capacity.

The budget

Both devices I purchased from amazon and neither includes the cost of shipping. The M.2 drive I purchased for $80 although nowadays you can find it for $70 and even less. The Hub I purchased for 15$ and nowadays you can get it for around 10$.

Summary

I can tell you that if we plan our working set well things will go well. Running out of ports to connect your peripherals is a hassle so we must calculate how many elements we are going to handle and always think of a larger number to have enough redundancy. The same reasoning can be applied to storage units. Physical storage is a priority for many users, although it is true that there are several solutions in the cloud that can help you to solve the shortage of space, you should keep in mind that to upload and download files you need a high speed internet connection, but we will talk about that in a future post.

Thank you very much for reaching the end of this article. If you found it useful please leave a comment and tell me about your experience with storage drives and USB Hubs.
