Using an iPhone 6S on 2022.

As I have stated on several occasions within this community, most of my life I have been an Android user and at least in general terms I am very satisfied with the experience, there are obvious problems but I feel that it suits my daily needs.

Despite this, almost two years ago after my phone at the time was damaged (A Samsung A10e) I had the opportunity to get hold of an iPhone 6S that I used for a couple of months, serving as a kind of introduction to iOS and everything it represents (even if it was in the hands of a device that was many years old).

Recently I was able to acquire a new device (A Xiaomi Mi11 Lite with which I am very satisfied) and, considering that I still have access to my old iPhone, I thought it would be quite interesting to do a temporary downgrade to review how it feels to handle this device in full 2022.

The most curious part of all this is that although Apple is currently going for the iPhone 13 and the 6S was released more than 6 years ago (2015) at the time of this post, it still supports the most recent version of iOS (15.3), even if it is necessary to cut certain more "modern" functions of the operating system to run on this old hardware.

In recent years, this constant and prolonged flow of updates has become one of the main incentives to get an iPhone, considering that despite its high prices, it is quite likely that they will stay up to date for at least half a decade.

Personally, although it is obvious that it cannot compete in terms of performance with my Current Android (Although it is a full-fledged 2021 mid-range) it never ceases to amaze me that a device from the year 2015 that can be obtained on the internet for less than $80 counts. with such a solid feature set. The camera, for example, works surprisingly well in decent lighting conditions, harnessing the power of its old 1.85Ghz processor to work wonders with just 12 Megapixels.

Its biggest drawbacks? If you are used to a high refresh rate, it is clear that the iPhone 6S is not the fastest phone in the world, although when it comes to multitasking it knows how to stay fluid and the optimization is very good.

On the other hand we have a lousy battery, regardless of whether the phone is brand new or has been in use for a couple of years, this is a sin that Apple seems not to have corrected until recently, making it impossible to use the iPhone 6S as a primary device without charging a portable battery on hand all the time.

However, as secondary devices they are very useful, especially if you are looking for a way to live the iOS experience without totally giving up the benefits of Android on your main phone, the iPhone 6S has iCloud, iMessage and Airdrop, advantages that have obvious alternatives within. of Google's operating system, but they mean giving up much of its strong integration with the Apple ecosystem.

It would be easy to start attacking each of its problems, I am aware of most of them... but on the positive side we have many advantages, it is a high-end from the past that continues to perform very decently and clearly represents a vision of the Smartphone that, although it shares many essential aspects with Android, knows how to establish itself with its own personality, it is a marvel in terms of engineering that renounces customization to deliver a totally curated experience but faithful to its own principles.

Cómo he expuesto en varias ocasiones dentro de esta comunidad, la mayoría de mi vida he sido un usuario Android y al menos en términos generales me siento muy satisfecho con la experiencia, hay problemas obvios pero siento que se adapta a mis necesidades diarias.

A pesar de esto, hace casi dos años luego de que mi teléfono de ese entonces se dañó (Un Samsung A10e) tuve la oportunidad de hacerme con un iPhone 6S que aproveché durante un par de meses, sirviendo como una especie de introducción a iOS y todo lo que representa (Aunque fuese en manos de un dispositivo con muchos años por encima).

Hace poco pude adquirir un nuevo dispositivo (Un Xiaomi Mi11 Lite con el que me siento muy satisfecho) y, considerando que aún tengo acceso a mi viejo iPhone pensé que sería bastante interesente hacer un downgrade temporal para reseñar como se siente manejar este dispositivo en pleno 2022.

La parte más curiosa de todo esto es que aunque actualmente Apple va por el iPhone 13 y el 6S se estrenó hace más de 6 años (2015) para la fecha de este post sigue soportando la versión más reciente de iOS (15.4), aunque sea necesario recortar ciertas funciones más "modernas" del sistema operativo para que corra en este antiguo hardware.

Estos últimos años ese flujo constante y prolongado de actualizaciones se ha convertido en uno de los principales incentivos para hacerse con un iPhone, considerando que a pesar de sus precios tan elevados es bastante probable que se mantengan al día durante al menos media década.

Personalmente, aunque es obvio que no puede competir en terminos de rendimiento con mi Android Actual (Aunque es un gama media del 2021 en toda regla) no deja de sorprenderme que un dispositivo del año 2015 que puede conseguirse en internet por menos de 80$ cuente con un set de prestaciones tan sólidas. La cámara, por ejemplo, trabaja sorprendentemente bien en condiciones decentes de luz, aprovechando el poder de su viejo procesador de 1.85Ghz para hacer maravillas con solo 12 Megapíxeles.

¿Sus mayores desventajas? Si estás acostumbrado a una taza de refresco elevada es evidente que el iPhone 6S no es el teléfono más rápido del mundo, aunque a la hora del multitasking sepa mantenerse fluido y la optimización sea muy buena.

Del otro lado tenemos una pésima batería, independientemente de que el teléfono sea totalmemte nuevo o tenga un par de años de uso, este es un pecado que Apple parece no haber corregido sino hasta hace poco, llegando a hacer que sea imposible emplear el iPhone 6S como dispositivo principal sin cargar una batería portatil a la mano todo el tiempo.

No obstante, como dispositivos secundarios son demasiado útiles, especialmente si buscas una forma de vivir la experiencia iOS sin renunciar totalmente a los beneficios de Android en tu teléfono principal, el iPhone 6S cuenta con iCloud, iMessage y Airdrop, ventajas que tienen alternativas obvias dentro del sistema operativo de Google, pero implican renunciar en gran parte a su sólida integración con el ecosistema de Apple.

Sería fácil comenzar a atacar cada uno de sus problemas, yo estoy consiente de la mayoría de ellos... pero en el lado positivo tenemos muchas ventajas, es un gama alta del pasado que sigue rindiendo de forma muy decente y que claramente representa una visión del Smartphone que aunque comparte muchos aspectos esenciales con Android, sabe erigirse con personalidad propia, es una maravilla en términos de ingeniería que renuncia a la personalización para entregar una experiencia totalmente curada pero fiel a sus propios principios.
