Should you buy a 3DS in 2023? - A short review

As I explained in a previous post, a few days ago I had the opportunity to buy an old Nintendo 3DS (The standard version) at a price that I found quite cheap at the time, considering that I had never had a portable console of this type, I decided to dedicate all this time to familiarize myself with its general operation, evaluating several of its most important releases and trying to understand if in the middle of 2023 it was still worth it.

It is to be expected that there are quite a few detractors, the Nintendo Switch has been on the market for a couple of years and represented a considerable leap in terms of raw power, although its benefits are much more humble than those of other current consoles such as the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series. X, however, it was apparent to me from the start that the Nintendo 3DS stands out precisely because of its ability to deliver an experience unlike anything I've ever played before, and for that very reason we could hardly consider the Switch a replacement for it in the future. the whole sense of the word.

Not everything is positive, obviously, the Nintendo 3Ds is a console that can be uncomfortable when it comes to long gaming sessions, the brightness level of its two screens is low and despite its durability, the capacity of its battery and touch screen suffer too much over time.

However, I have also found an inexhaustible source of entertainment, which in a nostalgic way knows how to capture very well the mentality that Nintendo held at the beginning of the last decade... Almost all of the most relevant franchises of Nintendo are present on the Nintendo 3DS. the company: Pokémon, Super Mario Bros, Kirby, Donkey Kong, etc... In fact, even those series that did not have the opportunity to have a new game within them, benefit from remakes or exact translations of the virtual console (For example: The Legend of Zelda and F-Zero, respectively), considering the large number of sales that this console had, even the support of third parties was decent, having unexpected jewels like Metal Gear Solid, a Resident Evil built exclusively for the console and even Street Fighter.

Despite the fact that emulation often seems to be a way to access all these titles with ease, considering how the 3DS works, it is always going to be preferable to play everything with the original hardware, especially when it comes to taking advantage of the archaic but attractive section three-dimensional view of the top monitor.

On the other hand, for those addicted to Homebrew and the possibility of modifying consoles to include their own software, the 3DS is one of the friendliest consoles for this, opening up a range of possibilities that puts it at the level of other jewels such as the PSP or the Nintendo Wii.

I maintain a generally positive opinion because I know that the real problems with my experience have been a product of the defects that my specific device has, most of these defects are a natural consequence of prolonged use so there is little point in complaining.

Do I recommend getting a Nintendo 3DS? Of course it is, although unfortunately many options I've seen online are too expensive, for the right price it can be a wonderful device.

Como expuse en un post previo, hace unos días tuve la oportunidad de comprar un viejo nintendo 3DS (La versión standard) a un precio que en su momento encontré bastante económico, considerando que nunca había tenido una consola portátil de este tipo decidí dedicar todo este tiempo a familiarizarme con su funcionamiento general, evaluando varios de sus lanzamientos más importantes y tratando de comprender si en pleno 2023 seguía valiendo la pena.

Es de esperar que existan bastantes detractores, el nintendo Switch lleva un par de años en el mercado y representó un salto considerable en términos de potencia bruta aunque sus prestaciones sean mucho las humildes que las de otrad consolas actuales como el PlayStation 5 o el Xbox Series X, no obstante, desde el principio fue aparente para mí que el Nintendo 3DS destaca es precisamente por su capacidad para ofrecer una experiencia diferente a cualquier cosa que haya jugado antes, y por eso mismo difícilmente podríamos considerar al Switch como un reemplazo de esta en todo el sentido de la palabra.

No todo es positivo, obviamente, el Nintendo 3Ds es una consola que puede pecar de incomoda cuando se trata de largas sesiones de juego, el nivel de brillo de sus dos pantallas es bajo y a pesar su durabilidad la capacidad de su batería y touch screen sufren demasiado con el paso del tiempo.

No obstante, también me he encontrado con una fuente inagotable de entretenimiento, que de manera nostálgica sabe capturar muy bien la mentalidad que sostenía nintendo a principios de la década pasada... En el nintendo 3DS se encuentran presentes casi todas las franquicias más relevantes de la empresa: Pokémon, Super Mario Bros, Kirby, Donkey Kong, etc... De hecho, incluso aquellas series que no tuvieron la oportunidad de contar con un juego nuevo de entro de ellas, se ven beneficiados con remakes o traslaciones exactas de la consola virtual (Por ejemplo: The Legend of Zelda y y F-Zero, respectivamente), considerando la gran cantidad de ventas que tuvo estaba consola, incluso el apoyo de las third parties fue decente, teniendo joyas inesperadas cómo Metal Gear Solid, un Resident Evil construido exclusivamente para la consola e incluso Steet Fighter.

A pesar de que la emulación muchas veces aparenta ser una forma de acceder a todos estos títulos con facilidad, considerando todo el funcionamiento del 3DS siempre va a ser preferible jugarlo todo con el hardware original, especialmente cuando se trata de aprovechar el arcaico pero atractivo apartado tridimensional del monitor superior.

Por otro lado, para aquellos adictos al Homebrew y la posibilidad de modear consolas para incluir software propio, el 3DS es una de las consolas más amables para esto, abriendo un abanico de posibilidades que la pone al nivel de otras joyas como el PSP o el Nintendo Wii.

Mantengo una opinion generalmente positiva porque sé que los verdaderos problemas con mi experiencia, han Sido un producto de los defectos con los que cuenta mi aparato concretamente, la mayoría de estos defectos son una consecuencia natural del uso prolongado así que no tiene mucho sentido quejarse.

¿Recomiendo adquirir un Nintendo 3DS? Por supuesto que sí, aunque lastimosamente muchas opciones que he visto en línea resultan demasiado costosas, bajo el precio correcto puede ser un dispositivo maravilloso.
