Photo taken by the author

¡¡Muchas Gracias!!

Hello Geek friends🔧, how are you? I hope you are doing great and welcome to a new publication made by me. Welcome to this post where I will tell you about something I learned to do thanks to the love I have for video game consoles it is a virtue that everyone should know to solve problems, especially if we want to repair any appliance, appliance, or in my case a controller or even a video game console.

More than half a year ago I didn't know what welding was, I really didn't know it, they even mentioned it and I was even afraid, according to my grandfather, one thing that a man has to learn is to learn to weld by himself, you should not be afraid of welding even if it is a single soldering iron or a complete welding machine, really when I learned to weld on my own it opened a lot of possibilities.

What was my motivation to learn to solder? Simple, my love for video game consoles haha, all this started when I recovered my classic Xbox, my mom had given it to a close uncle, a lot of time passed and I missed it, to the point that I wanted that console back home, my uncle told me that it didn't turn on so I asked him to give it to me to fix it when I took it apart I realized that it was too much for me, so I found a person who could fix it for 25$.

Photo taken by the author

The problem that the Xbox had was some capacitors that were very burned, in total there were four of them, they also did some interior cleaning and thermal paste was provided in some areas of the main board, after this maintenance, the console came back to life after 8 years, you have no idea of the happiness I felt when I saw the console alive again.

Despite that there was still a problem walking around and it was the controllers, they were not used in many years and it is possible that all of them are damaged, in total I had four, one of them was a Chinese version that worked at the time, but when it was tested once the console was fine it did not work, contrary to two that did work, one was black and the other was green (which is the one I normally use), the remaining one had a problem in the lever that unfortunately has no fix.

In this part I started to investigate how to repair these controls, I watched many videos on the internet and decided to try to solder, it was complicated at first, I burned myself a lot of times, haha, but once I lost the fear it was very easy. One of the things I learned from my experience in soldering is that you have to be very precise where you are going to put the soldering iron, precision is key to repairing something with soldering.

Photo taken by the author

After having had that experience, I decided to invest in some things that were going to help me to repair the Xbox controllers, I searched the internet for items and one that I needed to glue the solder of course was tin, this material melts easily once the soldering iron is at a suitable temperature, in turn, this material is a good conductor of current, ideal for joining wires.

Of course, the most important element when learning to solder is undoubtedly the soldering iron, if I didn't have a soldering iron I wouldn't be making this publication haha, according to what I have been told the soldering irons with wooden handles are better than the normal ones, I use this red one, it belongs to my uncle but once I learned to solder I practically took possession of it haha, yes this soldering iron takes a little longer to heat up and from time to time I have to clean the tip so that the residues don't interfere with the soldering.

Photo taken by the author

On the other hand, I discovered a tool that did not exist and is used by many people to solder more comfortably, in my case I needed it to repair to exchange the system of the levers of the Xbox controllers, this item is called tin sniffer, this device helps a lot to desolder a piece if you need to remove a component of an appliance or a card because you can use the tin sniffer.

The tin sucker is easy to use, but you have to get used to using it in your left hand (or in case you are a southpaw in your right hand) because to remove the tin you need to have a considerable speed, you must press the sucker when the tin is liquid and for that, you must have the soldering iron near, it will be impossible to change hands quickly before the tin dries (I tried it).

Photo taken by the author

To make it work you must press down the top button when the suction cup is in position press the middle button to make the suction cup do its job, you must clean what is inside, the tin residues are stored where the spring is located.

It is also important to have a multimeter tester at hand to be able to measure the continuity of the cables, not to say that it is a very important tool when fixing an appliance, a circuit, or in my case the controls of the consoles, you can measure the continuity of the cables, or verify if the points of an electronic card have continuity between them, of all the tools the tester is the one that less I know how to use, but as the saying goes the practice makes the master.

Photo taken by the author

To finish, soldering is a job that requires a lot of patience, precision, sight, and above all delicacy, you have no idea how many mistakes I made when I learned to solder haha, from burning an electronic card to causing a short circuit in a socket, mostly I soldered video game console controllers, if you ask me, the most difficult controllers to repair are those of PlayStation, they have many delicate components, instead the Xbox classic is simpler the truth.

Well, friends of Geek Zone, I hope you liked the publication of this day, I hope you have felt identified with my experience learning to solder haha, that very good technique to learn, and this solves many problems, I hope this inspires other people to take the risk and repair technology for themselves.

Photo taken by the author

Of course from the mistakes, you learn a lot, haha, all the tools you saw are mine although I'm thinking of investing in a renovation of these to fix more devices and appliances.

I won't take any more of your time, thanks for reading and for listening.

🙌Bye!🙌

Thank you very much!!
