A pic of the old 360 slim already disassembled with the fan still attached.

It''s been a while since I made a post repairing or disassembling consoles but here I leave some of the progress I could do in recent months, for those who do not know this is an xbox that my father had and in which I played a lot when I was little, it has had a ton of games that we have been changing and passing hands to play everything we could but for years he had a fairly common error in this type of consoles and is that it had an error in the fan or video card, were not the 3 red lights that indicated error in the software but it is a pretty annoying error to repair so I spent quite some time before getting serious with this project to fix the console.

I looked for some tutorials first to understand where I had to disassemble the console, I'm not an expert on this but the 360 is perhaps one of the most annoying consoles to open the case, I had to pry with a screwdriver in different ways to get the whole top part out and also the front flex, Once inside things were easier, the first thing I noticed here and I commented in my previous post was that the console had a barbaric amount of dust, of course, the console was for years in the room in the middle of a piece of furniture that used to accumulate dust and I think that in part was what started the problem I'm trying to solve.

imagen.png

Here are some pictures of how the whole disassembly process went, the DVD drive was in perfect condition and I was also able to test some of the mechanisms on it, the power cable also worked pretty well with the console power supply so I didn't have to remove it but just clean it with a brush and a vacuum around the circuits, a different story was the fan and the video card, both looked worn and the fan was barely working partly because it was full of dust, one cleaning later and although it was still a bit worn at least it was no longer going to choke the chip inside with dust and dirt.

In case you are wondering even the console in this state (disassembled) still worked if I connected the power supply to the console, I first tried to clean all the dust I saw before connecting it again to see if this was the reason why it did not work, but still the same error arose why the console did not work, the Xbox 360 e74 error seems not to be a common error in the Slim versions of the Microsoft console, even so my console unfortunately had one of these almost impossible to repair errors, so it's time to investigate and go deeper.

It turns out that this error is being more known and recognized by the media in certain types of Xbox because unlike being a software bug as commonly are the errors of the three red lights of death, this error has a much more tangible origin, the rescaling graphics chip that can be clearly seen when you open the console seems to be the cause of this error, either because the console fan is not working properly (I think it is my case due to dust) or because of some error in the manufacture of this specific type of console (manufacturer) either way at least knowing where these messages are coming from gives me the opportunity to focus on the problem and find some solutions or at least try to bypass this problem.

The console flex was also a little loose so I reconnected it to the front of the 360 just to keep the aesthetics of the console a little better.
imagen.png

On one side (Right) we have the AMA rescaling graphics chip that is responsible among other things to give us image when we start any game or the console in general, so if at any time fails or has already factory some imperfection it would be normal that we do not turn on the console or not enter the main menu, for now I have not wanted to touch or disassemble too much these parts because I have no idea how to manipulate these chips without risking the entire console, but knowing that this is where all the problems develop gives me some more security of what materials I need and where to aim.

Note: researching a little more the e74 error I found an article where Microsoft was seen to recognize a design flaw in the first models of the slim version of the console, apparently it has to do with a bad placement of the chip that would eventually affect the hdmi port by the flow of hot air from the GPU, so probably we will have to change this chip and some other things (besides not to assemble the console and keep it in a cold place when playing) to revive it and at least work a few more years, I leave a quote from the information I got.

According to the experts, the problem is caused by the integrated video rescaling (ANA). In the first console models that included the HDMI connection, this chip was placed in a very undesirable place, as it is placed in the middle of the hot air flow produced by both the CPU and the GPU. - Hackconsolas

Continuing with the research I also found different methods to solve this problem from removing the GPU and replacing it completely to simply giving it a cleaning, of course buy another xbox to use some of these GPUs and replace them seems to me an expensive and unproductive idea but if I want to try a method that I saw in this video where we heat the entire motherboard doing a kind of cheap Reballing to the main chips of the console, I have to investigate a little more as I would do for the model that I have (Slim) but this is one of those methods that I have immense desire to try to do.

All this is what I will be working on during the week, for now I only have one piece disassembled but when I finish I hope to have at least the possibility of playing some games before completely discarding the idea of whether it is repairable this type of consoles, that's all for now if you liked the post stop by my blog! for sure you get something you like and see you in the next one!

Yeey you made it to the end of the post :) thanks for joining me today!
