Hello feathered community, I had some time without doing projects with a particular species, and I decided to photograph and film the behavior of one of the most beautiful and emblematic birds of Portugal, the Phoenicopterus roseus or known by the common name European Flamingo, what I captured My attention is that I had never seen a flock in this area! To date today 03/30 they are still in Seixal Bay, it is an area that is about 10 minutes from my house, since I have lived here in 3 years I have never seen flamingos around here! So let's see some interesting features of this animal! and answer the question what are you doing here??? are you lost? are they common around here??? have settled in this area??? LET'S SEE!!!🤔😮😍🦩

VEAMOS!!!👨‍🏫🌅🚩🧭🌏

ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION🦩🧠👨‍🏫 / IDENTIFICACION👨‍🎓👨‍💻

bb.jpg

It seems difficult when we start in the world of ornithology but identifying flamingos is not difficult, we also apply a little common sense here in Portugal the predominant one is the "Phoenicopterus roseus" known as European flamingo, we can see it in several European countries including Portugal, in the 80's it was very difficult to see flocks of these birds in Portugal, but over the years they moved from Spain to here and little by little they inhabited aquatic areas near rivers and hestuaries! BUT... There is something that I must highlight and that is that they DO NOT nest in Portugal!!! continuing with the identification it is important to see the legs and its head, we can see a difference in the tarsus! in the "Chilean" they are darker than the European and have a striking color in the area of the patella! If you see the photo I took, the legs are totally colorful, so it corresponds to a European!😍😮👨‍🏫

OBSERVATION DAY 1🦩🧠👨‍🏫 / DIA 1 DE OBSERVACION👨‍🎓👨‍💻

img_9068.jpg

img_9071.jpg

I used a 400mm objective and still the birds were very distant I would say 100 to 150 meters from the shore! just observe two individuals that were feeding as the tide went out they moved following the movement of the tide so they didn't stay in one place! flamingos have specialized beaks with "bristles" that are like specialized "brushes" to sweep the sand and capture mollusks, small fish, shrimp, their diet is varied! I had always seen the movement they make with their heads as they put it in the water and remove all the mud! but in my observation I saw that they also make a movement with their legs!😃🤔🤔

Flamingos🧭🦩

Note that flamingos have no problem sharing their space with other species, for example I saw some seagulls very close to this pair of flamingos, I noticed that they did not feel threatened, at one point in the day they were very close to the shore and many people They passed by and photographed them since it is not common to see them around here! And they didn't move, that is, they didn't feel threatened by people either! This beautiful bird can measure up to 150cm tall and weigh more than 4 kilos. They are very large and heavy animals!🧠🌍

OBSERVATION DAY 2🦩🧠👨‍🏫 / DIA 2 DE OBSERVACION👨‍🎓👨‍💻

img_9077.jpg

What a surprise I was when on the second day of observation 4 flamingos surprised me, this time the tide was much further from the shore! and this led me to be much more confused, because I thought those two were lost? but why did others appear? in total there were 5! It didn't make sense that it was a lost flock! in fact, the bibliographical references tell us that they are common in Portugal throughout the year! so he had to see in "EBIRD" if he had been registered in this area before!😮👨‍🏫🦩🚩

Well, according to the Ebird website, the flamingo has already been sighted in almost the entire territory of the country and since I live very close to the "tejo" hestuary, this habitat is perfect for the bird and it tends to settle here during the whole year! Therefore, registering this beautiful bird with photos and video corroborates what has been described by scientists!🤩👨‍🏫🦩

OBSERVATION DAY 3🦩🧠👨‍🏫 / DIA 3 DE OBSERVACION👨‍🎓👨‍💻

img_9074.jpg

img_9076.jpg

img_9093.jpg

How fantastic was day three because I saw a group of people looking towards the hestuary and I thought... Surely they are watching the flamingos, and to my surprise I found that the flock increased to 15 individuals in 3 days! wow!!!! Apparently a "solitary" flamingo or two can arrive and settle for a few days in a place in search of food, as other flocks fly through the area and observe that there are 1, 2, 3 flamingos feeding and see that it is safe they can join the or individuals, to create a large flock! BUT the flock in flamingos only works as "the more eyes the better we protect ourselves" but SOCIALLY it does not tell us that they interact with each other! and there are scientific data that corroborate this information! flamingos have different personalities so there are flamingos that don't get along with others!🤩🤩

What you can see in the video is that they protect each other, if they feel threats they move further! I was very close to them so they got scared and started to move in a group! is the advantage of when there is a flock with many individuals! but unlike the group of 2 individuals on the first day! They have NEVER approached the shore because they instinctively know there is little protection with only "4" eyes!🙂🙂

webp.net_gifmaker_9_.gif

Another interesting behavior that I was able to record is the movement of the legs of these animals to remove the mud and be able to feed! stirring up the mud can suspend small mollusks in the water as many shelter within the mud!👨‍🏫🤔

We can see in the last photo how there is a change in the coloration of the animal and this is due to its maturity, the adults have brighter colors and a characteristic pretty pink, the juveniles are white and with a very opaque pink!😮😮
