You Really Need to Do the Things You Used to Do When you Were Younger
Introduction
Some months ago I came across someone talking about this research carried out on rejuvenation. It absolutely blew my mind and it reminded me that, from my knowledge of psychology, I already knew this!
The research was carried out in 1981, 8 men in their 70s were taken to a monastery and made to do things they did in 1959 when they were younger. Apart from that, music, TV, magazines, and other entertainment from 1959 were scattered all around.
This was just to make them feel like it was 1959 again.
At the end of the experiment these men were rejuvenated! Their grip, vision, hearing, and other age-related defects improved greatly!
It all went to show that the relationship between mind and body in humans are closer than most of us can dream off. What you feel can affect the actual state of your body greatly.
Do Them!
I talk about this research not because I want everyone to repeat what was done here, that would be great, but it would take a lot for you to invoke the feeling of childhood. You can plan for it, but until then, DON'T RUN AWAY FROM THE THINGS YOU USED TO DO AS A CHILD!
With adults I've come to notice a lot of times that they're usually dismissive of the activities they used to do as children.
They go to the pool and they don't do much like they used to, they see the video games they used to play as children and all they want to do is talk about it with the younger ones instead of playing it.
Not just video games, but most activities they used to do as children. You find them talking a lot about it when they come across it but they hardly ever join in the fun.
Too scared to be seen doing things that are "meant for kids". Many don't even allow themselves to be caught watching cartoons.
I find myself making these mistakes too when it comes to music, I find myself skipping old music a lot. Since I realized this is what I do I've began to make the effort to play old music, and we can all agree we feel younger when we listen to old music that we used to listen to when we were younger.
There are a lot of little things we skip because we think we are now older, we should fight the feeling of these things being beneath us.
Ride a bike, do the dance you used to, get the kind of entertainment you used to. Your life should not be about the sort of progress that has to do with different repertoires for different periods of your life.
Don't always leave the past in the past. Bring all your old stuff and mix em with your new stuff. They can coexist. You surely don't hate all your old stuff, they used to be what made you happy, at least some of them can still make you happy.
Enjoy your freaking self! You probably can't be young again, but you can feel younger and this would improve the quality of your current life.
The End
