5 lessons learned from HiveFest VR 😎 (Blockchain conference in Virtual Reality)

5 Dinge, die mich das HiveFest VR gelehrt hat. Mein erster Besuch einer virtuellen Blockchain-Konferenz und einer NFT-Vernissage in Virtual Reality (VR).

#1 VR ist immer noch in den Kinderschuhen.

Zunächst einmal das Frustrierende: Die App (AltspaceVR 2D PC App) war leider total buggy, ist hängen geblieben, Menüs haben sich nicht geöffnet, musste immer wieder neu gestartet werden, und das Schlimmste, ich konnte mich nicht in die unterschiedlichen Räume der Konferenz teleportieren. Am zweiten Tag gab es dann direkte Links zu den Räumen. Dann hat es geklappt :)

Avatare haben wie 2015 immer noch keine Arme oder Beine, sondern sind herumschwebende Geister-Torsos 😂

Ich denke, das betrifft nicht nur AltSpaceVR, sondern VR steckt immer noch in den Kinderschuhen, hat aber Potential.

HiveFest VR hat definitiv wieder mein Interesse für VR geweckt.

#2 Präsentationen in VR sind besser als gedacht.

Jetzt das Positive: Ich war am Anfang skeptisch, ob man eine Konferenz überhaupt in VR abhalten kann, aber trotz der ganzen technischen Probleme auf der Main-Stage (kein Ton, geklonte Räume ohne Präsentator) waren die Präsentationen selbst eine coole Sache. Am besten ihr seht euch den Live-Stream an, um zu verstehen, was ich meine.

Der Präsentationsablauf selbst war professionell, Avatare konnten applaudieren, aufzeigen und Fragen stellen, es gab zu jedem Vortrag Präsentationsfolien auf einer virtuellen Wand und im Live-Stream gab es sogar unterschiedliche Kameraperspektiven.

#3 Konferenzen in VR skalieren noch nicht so gut.

Ich weiß nicht genau, welches Limit AltspaceVR hat, aber generell haben VR Chaträume ähnlich wie Online-Games ein technisches Teilnehmer-Limit. Wenn sich zu viele Teilnehmer in einem Raum befinden, wird der Raum geclont und die Teilnehmer auf virtuelle Räume aufgeteilt.

#4 Es fühlt sich ein bisschen komisch an, unbekannte User in VR anzusprechen.

Vielleicht geht es nur mir so, aber wenn man die User noch nicht kennt, ist es schwierig mit einem neuen User in VR ins Gespräch zu kommen. User bewegen sich entweder wie Geister / Lurker durch den Raum oder stehen in kleinen Gruppen und plaudern, die man dann auch nicht unterbrechen will. Gut, das ist in RL vielleicht auch nicht anders, aber es fühlt sich virtuell einfach noch komischer an, wenn man das das erste Mal macht. Was meint ihr?

#5 Die "Desktop App" ist grundsätzlich eine gute Alternative gegen Motion-Sickness.

Kann mir im Moment nicht vorstellen einen ganzen Tag eine VR-Brille zu tragen, um bei einer Konferenz dabei zu sein. Das Gute an der 2D Desktop App ist, dass man von der App keine Motion-Sickness bekommen kann.

5 things HiveFest VR taught me. My first time attending a virtual blockchain conference and NFT vernissage in Virtual Reality (VR).

#1 VR is still in its infancy.

First, the frustrating part: The app (AltspaceVR 2D PC app) was unfortunately buggy, got stuck, menus didn't open, had often to be restarted, and worst of all, I couldn't teleport to the different conference rooms. On the second day direct links to the rooms were published. Then it worked :)

Avatars still don't have arms or legs like in 2015, avatars are torsos floating around like ghosts 😂

I think this doesn't just apply to AltspaceVR, bottom line is VR is still in its infancy but has potential.

However, HiveFest VR has definitely reignited my interest in VR.

#2 Presentations in VR are better than expected.

Now for the positive: I was skeptical at first that you could even hold a conference in VR, but despite all the technical issues on the Main Stage (no audio, cloned rooms with no presenter), the presentations themselves were a cool thing. Best you watch the live stream to understand what I mean.

The presentation flow itself was professional, avatars could applaud, raise their hand and ask questions, there were presentation slides on a virtual wall for each talk, and there were even different camera angles in the live stream.

#3 Conferences in VR don't scale that well yet.

I don't know exactly what AltspaceVR's limit is, but generally VR chat rooms have a technical participation limit similar to online games. If there are too many participants in a room, the room is virtually cloned and participants are split between virtual rooms.

#4 It feels a bit awkward to start a chat with an unknown user in VR.

Maybe it's just me, but if you don't know the users yet, it's hard to strike up a conversation with a new user in VR. Users either move around the room like ghosts / lurkers or stand in small groups and chat, which you don't want to interrupt. Well, that might not be too different from RL though, but it feels even weirder virtually the first time you do it. What do you think?

#5 The "Desktop App" is actually a good alternative against motion sickness.

Can't imagine wearing VR glasses for a whole day to be at a conference. The good thing about the 2D Desktop app: you can't get motion sickness from the app.
