How many hours a day are you on social networks? There is no denying the positive impact that technology has had on our lives, especially in the last 20 years, but we must also take into account the negative effects that may arise. It seems that the pandemic that started in 2020 has made another "pandemic" even more pronounced: loneliness. This has major emotional consequences as we live in a very different reality from thousands of years of existence of the human race. This is my first post in the Emotions & Feelings community, I hope you enjoy it.

For some time I have noticed something that for a while I thought it was my personal perception, but with the pandemic it has been accentuated, for obvious reasons, and by doing some research on Google I have confirmed that it is not my idea but that it is a phenomenon that is happening and there are studies about it. If you do not want to read you can watch this video that Platzi platform has uploaded to its YouTube account:

There are many factors that come into play, but the important thing here is how it affects us emotionally. Personally, I have always been a person who socializes very little, either due to lack of affinity with other people or lack of people of my age who are like-minded (as is currently the case). I have always been very independent in this aspect, so this phenomenon is not something that affects me as much as it could affect more extroverted or social people.

I have noticed that people my age nowadays, i.e. young people of about 25 years old, have few ways of relating or meeting each other according to common purposes or tastes. It's all through the internet, either through traditional social networks or dating apps like Tinder. You may not like religion, but as the video says, it should be noted that churches are one of the face-to-face meeting places that have survived the passage of centuries, and they remain there because a certain conservative mindset regarding technology is maintained.

Human beings thousands of years ago began to gather in larger and larger groups, and to do so, they had to establish themselves in meetings or ceremonies where everyone shared something in common such as religion or culture. Imagine the typical scene of aboriginal communities in front of a bonfire. And everything remained "more or less" similar until the year 2000, before the explosion of the Internet. I don't know if I make myself clear, but you can also leave your comment if you think so or not.

In the Humanitas community we recently proposed an initiative that addresses the issue of engineering and humanities. We are encouraged to reflect on how human engineering has managed to satisfy human needs, and whether this engineering is being used adequately in the present, through new technologies.

Emotions are one of the main characteristics of human beings. We are social beings, and while loneliness suits some people better than others, I believe that there is no human being who feels good being alone for long periods of time. Platzi's video mentions that we have replaced normal relationships with "parasocial relationships" through social media.

All of this may sound depressing and almost apocalyptic, but I think we simply need to give ourselves a little time to adapt to this new reality that we are just beginning to be aware of. The coronavirus pandemic is not the cause of all this, but rather amplified this phenomenon that had already been growing for years. Just as programming is the "profession of the moment", I believe that more and more psychologists will be needed in the coming years.

Not everything is negative, I believe that in the coming years solutions and "counterweights" to the problem posed by the excess of social networks, information, and technologies that are not necessarily positive for the mental and emotional health of human beings will begin to emerge. I think I will write about topics related to this in the next posts.

What is your opinion? Do you think there is more loneliness in the world? How do you think it affects us most from an emotional point of view? I'll read you in the comments.

Saludos @acont 🍨
