Negative Impact of Beetles

Beetles can be found in almost all habitats except sea and polar regions, they interact with their ecosystems in several ways: beetles often eat plants and fungi, destroy insects and plants, and eat other invertebrates.

Some species are serious agricultural pests, such as the Colorado potato beetle, while others like Coccinellidae (ladybugs) feed on aphids and other plant-eating insects that can damage plants.

Beetles usually have a hard outer frame including elytra. Some types such as the weevil have a very short elytra and there are also beetles that have a softer elytra.

The anatomy of beetles is generally quite the same and is typical of other insects, although there are some examples of form renewal, such as adaptations to water beetles which can trap air bubbles under the elytra for use while diving.

The Coleoptera, with about 400,000 species, is the largest of all orders, constituting almost 40% of the described insects and 25% of all known animal life-forms; new species are discovered frequently. The largest of all families, the Curculionidae (weevils), with some 83,000 species members, belongs to this order. Beetles- Wikipedia source

Coleoptera is the order that has the most species, namely 25% of all forms of animal life that exist and around 400,000 species are described as beetles. There are many new species that are often found.

Beetles are endopterygotes, which means they undergo complete metamorphosis, with a series of striking and relatively organized changes in body structure between hatching and becoming adults after the immobile cocoon stage.Holometabolous-metamorphosis- britannica source

Some types of deer beetles, have sexual dimorphism (a condition in which two sexes of the same species exhibit different characteristics beyond differences in their sexual organs) which is quite high. Males can have a very large mandible (jawbone) that they use to fight other males. Encyclopaedia Britannica: Or a Dictionary of Arts- Book Online- source

Many aposematic beetles have bright colors and warning patterns to ward off predators. As with beetles that live in sandy places, even though they don't have bright colors or markings, they have an effective camouflage method.

In ancient Egyptian religion, important symbol in the form of the dung beetle (Scarabaeus sacer), which lays its eggs in dung balls fashioned through rolling. This beetle was associated with the divine manifestation of the early morning sun, Khepri, whose name was written with the scarab hieroglyph and who was believed to roll the disk of the morning sun over the eastern horizon at daybreak. Since the scarab hieroglyph, Kheper, refers variously to the ideas of existence, manifestation, development, growth, and effectiveness, the beetle itself was a favourite form used for amulets in all periods of Egyptian history. Beetles have a quite prominent role in human culture, ranging from the symbol of the holy scarab (dung beetle aka Scarabaeus sacer which is associated with the manifestation of the morning sun god, Khepri in ancient Egypt).

Beetles are also influential in the art world and can be used as pets. Beetles are often a form of entertainment for humans by being reported with other insects.

Many groups of brightly colored and attractive beetles can become objects of collection and decorative displays.

There are more than 300 species of beetles that are used as human food, most of which are eaten while still in the form of larvae. Species that are widely consumed include flour caterpillars and rhino beetle larvae. The Role Of Insects - PDF-source

The negative impact of the presence of beetles on human life is that they can become agricultural pests, forestry, and horticulture.

Some beetles that can become dangerous pests include cotton beetles, Colorado potato beetles, coconut herpine beetles, and mountain pine beetles.

The name Coleoptera, derived from the Greek words "koleos" meaning sheath and "ptera" meaning wings, refers to the modified front wings which serve as protective covers for the membranous hind wings.Coleoptera source

However, most beetles also do not cause economic damage, such as female beetles and dung beetles which can actually be useful to help humans control insect pests.

The name Coleoptera, comes from the Greek ‘koleopteros’ (κολεόπτερος), which was made by Aristotle for the mention of a group of insects belonging to the front wing elytra and the ters shrouded wing ’which is commonly called koleos (veiled) and pteron (wing).

Nice article!

However, in this community, dedicated to all these little creatures, insects are the "stars", not the "pests".

We humans tend to see everything on earth from our rather egocentric perspective: very quickly every food competitor (which in reality doesn't make anything else than we do: try to subsist and survive) is called a "pest" with a seemingly negative imapct on ... no: not on the planet with its nature as a whole, but on US.

Considered from a neutral perspective there is not a single insect species which causes as much damage as we do! In many ways we are destroying the great nature which sourrounds us, and even farmers worldwide will suffer more from the consquences of the human caused climate change than from any beetle.
