The topic of the evolution of insect wings is a topic that to this day keeps entomologist biologists busy! There is no correct theory if not a set of hypotheses that are more creditable than others! In a past post I explained that insects are arthropods and are one of the most abundant groups on the planet! but many are unaware that these animals have a fascinating evolutionary history!
There is a group of marine biologists (MBL) who demonstrated that insects could evolve through an excretion that expelled some crustaceans through their legs, and that they managed to get incorporated into the wall of the animal's body! amazing, right?
Many theories have emerged of how the wings of insects evolved, but the most successful is the one proposed by the (MBL) and for this they have used many scientific articles from years ago as a study guide, in addition to using genetic laboratory techniques to make comparisons and homologies!
We must go back millions of years to see how an ancient crustacean took a great evolutionary leap secreting a "lobe" from its leg! this to make a water-land leap, scientists average that this happened more than 300 million years ago! What happened is that the closest segments of the legs were incorporated into the body wall in the embryonic phase!
Later, after the embryonic phase, the "lobes" of the legs moved from the lateral areas of the body towards the back of the animal, originating the wings! And why had this theory never been deduced? As the specialist BRUCE expresses: "only until 2010, were crustaceans related to insects"๐๐
Before 2010, scientists classified insects in the group of "myriapods", that is, together with centipedes! The most curious thing is that when you look for scientific references on the evolution of wings, do you know what you get? absolutely nothing!!! there was no strong theory about the evolution of wings! And how are you in times where science has advanced so much that the most important thing for the current scientist is to maintain a good reputation ... NOBODY WANTED TO RISK IN WRITING IN THE BOOKS ANY THEORY THAT WAS WRONG!

And what happened decades later is that researchers thought that insect wings did not have an "ancestor" and that it was an evolutionary novelty! for insects to take that great evolutionary leap and to be able to colonize the planet!

The genomic study helps to solve these mysteries because everything on the planet has a common ancestor! evolved from an ancestor who decided to make physiological and morphological changes to perpetuate his existence for thousands of years! and it is clear how the insects passed from the sea to the land and the wings were the main resource to colonize many parts of the world! EVERYTHING HAS AN ANCESTOR!
Scientist Bruce used comparisons of some arthropods like (Parhyale) and segmented legs of other insects including the famous fruit fly! and through the editing of CRISPR-Cas9 genes, I achieve kinship with the body of crustaceans, solving a mystery and creating an acceptable theory in the scientific field!
Bruce got a small problem to solve and that is that he detected with the genomic tests that there was a segment in the seventh leg that merged with the body! Reading old entomologist references from 1890 and 1980 turned out to get your answer as not only did the leg segments join the body but they also moved!
If we start from the beginning that insects evolved with these accessories to colonize and disperse many types of habitats then we must assume that they also present different adaptations and it is true! there are many types of wings! the first recorded insect with wings is Delitzchala bitterfeldensis and was over 50 million years old!
I did a little research comparing the wings of 2 insects and as you can see the wings of the grasshopper are structurally different from the wings of the dragonfly! but ... don't they perform the same function? Yes ... Both insects use their wings to move but the dragonfly has more developed wings since it is used for flight, reproduction, food! The grasshopper spends more time on the ground than in the air, and its underdeveloped wing is used to escape from incredible predators, right?
