Dragonflies, a fast-flying insect

DSC05927.JPG

I have seen many dragonflies from my childhood, many species and many colors. They have always fascinated me because of their beautiful structural features. It looks like the structure of a helicopter. I call it the natural helicopter. This insect is capable of flying and has four wings. The wings help them to fly gracefully. It is because of their ability to fly that they were named dragonflies.

The back wings of the dragonfly are smaller than the front wings as seen in these pictures. Its body is rounded and the tail is tapered. Stripes from the body to tail were decorated with black and red colors. The head and main body of the dragonfly are round.

They have six legs I counted. Although they have many legs, they cannot walk. However, their feet help them catch prey

Dragonfly's eyes are very large. If you try to find their eyes you will see that it covers most of their head. Their mouths are under their eyes, but their eyes will be the best sight for you.

Their wings are of thin membranes. The wings are transparent and shiny. Their four wings give them the power to fly fast. Dragonflies can run at a speed of 70 km per hour with the help of wings. They can move forward, backward, or curved paths. The color of these wings is also brown and red.

There is no shortage of species of dragonflies and each species looks different. There are about 7,000 species of dragonflies living around the world. There are probably many species in your neighborhood that you can find. I see different species of dragonflies every now and then and their unique characteristics amaze me.

Dragonflies live in water as they are born in water. We find them on land because they can fly and go out to gather food for themselves. However, female dragonflies lay eggs in water just as mosquitoes lay eggs. But the time must be summer. It takes only 8 days for dragonflies to hatch from eggs. Then their struggling life begins. Baby dragonflies make their diet of insects, mosquito larvae, and small children.

Sexual intercourse serves as a means of reproduction in most animal species. In the case of dragonflies, mating plays a role in bringing their future generations into the world. A male supplies sperm to a female dragonfly through copulation. Before they copulate, both the male and the female simultaneously cling to each other, fly into the sky, and land on the ground, where the male curls into the female's womb and releases the sperm. Strange sex life!

In order to survive in the animal world, animals must be hunted and eaten. Dragonflies eat insects, flies, midges, and mosquitoes. So they have to hunt them. They catch insects in flight and make their food. Dragonflies have many legs that help them catch their prey. They themselves become food for others as birds hunt and eat them. In nature, you either have to be someone's food or make food for others. It is tough for organisms to protect themselves in such conditions. Because these insects breed in abundance, they are still abundant in the world today. But many species are going extinct which is not good. Every organism has a role to play in maintaining the balance of nature. Climate change may threaten the existence of dragonflies.
