While walking along a path in the Parque Jardín Botánico de Naguanagua (Carabobo, Venezuela), I found a pair of insects copulating. The pair belongs to a species of heteropteran of the genus Dysdercus of the family Pyrrhocoridae, and is probably Dysdercus maurus.

Searching the literature I found that this insect displays an elaborate courtship behavior, initiated by the male attempting to approach the female laterally and touching its body with his antennae. This generates struggles between males and females in mating attempts. Females may reject males by pushing or running and even vigorously shaking their bodies in an attempt to dislodge the male from its dorsum. In general, the female may reject the male by running away or may allow copulation after numerous courting positions.

Following sexual conflicts during courtship, females actively choose mates based on morphological and behavioral traits. Larger males, with more symmetrical tibiae and longer tarsi that better impose copulation, are more successful in sexual competition. During copulation the male assumes a final posture, positioning itself in a diametrically opposite direction in relation to the female's body, as shown in the photographs.

It should be noted that during copula, which may last three days, females may continue to feed. Most of the time, copula does not limit both male and female to move, eat, drink and even excrete. Females lay eggs shortly after disengagement. The long engagement period is probably related to the male's strategy to avoid sperm competition.

Above I commented on elaborate courtship behavior and it is due, in addition, to the fact that female choice may operate in such a way that each female has its own optimal male size for mating, resulting from a trade-off between the negative influence of large partner size in female fecundity and the advantages of large male size for offspring fitness. Larger males could create problems in the feeding activities of females and the extended copulation period found in Dysdercus species has been found to be related to the clutch size of the female. Female fertility is also related to food availability and quality. Therefore, copulating with larger males may imply the reduction of female fecundity, and on the other hand, the selection of smaller males may compromise the fitness of the offspring. Thus, the best choice for a female may be a male of average size in relation with its own size.

Two months after the visit to the botanical garden, I went hiking in a mountain in Montalbán (Carabobo, Venezuela) and in a wooded area I found another individual that I photographed, and it seems to me to be the same species, Dysdercus maurus. The individual was walking on leaves of a plant of the tribe Miconieae that I think is of the genus Clidemia. I continue to comment on the genus Dysdercus in relation to how they feed and coloration.

The genus Dysdercus includes species which feed on the succulent parts as well as on the mature dry seeds of various plants. The adult insect of the genus can also feed on both unripe fruits and the seeds of ripe fruits to become sexually mature and lay fertile eggs.

In heteropteran insects, the mouthparts are always composed of the same set of elongated structures that together form a piercing-sucking proboscis. The proboscis is formed by the short sclerite of the labrum and the epipharynx, hypopharynx, labium and piercing stipes. The latter are formed by the mandibles and maxillae, which are entirely or partially covered by the labium. The epipharynx forms a flexible roof for the anterior part of the hypopharynx and the two together form the sucking pump.

The sucking and piercing mouthparts of these insects only allow them to ingest liquids. In some species, the different modes of feeding with their mouthparts have been studied. A starved individual, when offered a test substrate as food, initially perceives its presence by means of its antennae, and then extends its proboscis towards the substrate. The subsequent action of the insect's labium and stylets during feeding varies according to the substrate. I comment some examples.

Comento algunos ejemplos.

When the food is a seed, the insect first explores the surface with the proboscis and if it finds the micropyle, or natural opening in the seed that allows the absorption of water for the germination process, it introduces the stylets inside the seed; it can also introduce them through cracks in the seed hull. If there are several individuals feeding on the same seed, so the micropyle will not be accessible to all, and the seed has no cracks, the insect can use its stylets to pierce a hard, tough hull. If the hull is separated from the seed, the insect applies the tip of its proboscis to the soft surface of the seed without searching far, and inserts its stylets into the seed tissues.

If the food is the fresh leaf of a plant, it inserts its stylets between the pigment glands on the petiole or on a vein of the lamina. In this an alternate ejection and ingestion of the liquid salivary drops may occur.

Tests have been performed when the food is solid, for example, with a tablet of the sugar sucrose used as a substrate. In this case, the tip of the proboscis of the insect comes in contact with the surface of the substrate and ejects drops of liquid saliva which it ingests successively. Each drop of saliva liquefies a little quantity of sugar at the point of its contact with the substrate and, after sucking the saliva with the liquefied part of the sugar, a small depression is left in the tablet at the feeding site. Then the tip of the proboscis advances into this depression which deepens to form a tunnel as the liquefaction of the sugar by the ejected salivary drops and their ingestion continues.

If the food is liquid, the insect introduces its proboscis and the stylets are likely to protrude slightly or not at all, but it has been evidenced that they do not eject saliva during the ingestion of a freely exposed liquid substrate, including water.

Note in the photographs that the insects have pigmentations ranging from orange to red and also slightly white coloration. The coloration of Dysdercus species is due to a group of natural pigments known as pterins. Among the pterins, erythropterin, isoxanthopterin and leucopterin are the most important compounds. Pterins are heterocyclic compounds (part of the larger pteridine group).

Erythropterin gives these insects an orange or red color, while isoxanthopterin and leucopterin provide a white color. There are species that show a yellow color and these species have the same pterins as the orange- or red-colored ones; emphasizing that the differences in the coloration are mainly caused by the different amounts of erythropterin.

Among the species of the genus Dysdercus there are several species in which during their postembryonic development they show partly yellow and partly red pigmentation.

Following the metabolic routes of pteridines during development, the yellow pigment of the eggs could be a pteridine known as xanthopterin, which is a precursor of erythropterin; in time xanthopterin disappears and erythropterin appears. Consequently, the yellow pigment of adults should be the pteridin known as 7-methyl-xanthopterin. However, in the species Dysdercus nigrofasciatus and Dysdercus intermedius (similar to the species I show in the photographs), in which the coloration has been investigated, neither xanthopterin nor 7-methyl-xanthopterin was responsible for the yellow coloration. However, both red and yellow species contained erythropterin, which can cause yellow, orange or red coloration depending on the concentration. In this sense, 7-methyl-xanthopterin may be present in such small amounts that it would not be important for pigmentation, and this would also be the case for xanthopterin, which is only found in the larvae and adults of the yellow species, but only in very small amounts.
