Spiny Orb-weaver: The Strangest Species of Spider in the Order Araneae
The spiny orb-weaver (Gasteracantha sp.) is a species of spider with the strangest shape in the order Araneae. This spider has a crab-like appearance because it has a hard and spiny back shell. But as far as I know, these shell spines are harmless and non-venomous.
The Spiny orb-weaver's behavior is similar to that of orb-weaver spiders, in that they also build a web and live there. Cobwebs not only serve as a place to live but also serve as a snare to trap prey.
Here are the photos that were captured by me some time ago in a local forest in North Aceh.
