Fascinating Insect: Stilt-Legged Fly (Micropezidae)

Sometimes, some people often misunderstand that the flies in these pictures are Neriidae or what are commonly called cactus flies, even though they are Micropezidae or what are commonly called stilt-legged flies. However, both the Neriidae and the Micropezidae are close relatives and belong to the Diptera order.

The Micropezidae have a rather long body with tall legs, two shorter front legs, and often lifted forward. Its head is also small which is more dominated by its eyes.

When viewed as a whole, it is not much different between Neriidae and Micropezidae, it's just that the difference is clearly visible in their faces, because Neriidae has faces that are tapered down.

Terkadang, sebagian orang sering salah mendeskripsikan bahwa lalat dalam gambar-gambar ini adalah Neriidae atau yang biasa disebut lalat kaktus, padahal mereka adalah Micropezidae atau yang biasa disebut lalat berkaki jangkung. Namun demikian, baik Neriidae dan Micropezidae adalah kerabat dekat dan sama-sama termasuk dalam Ordo Diptera.

Micropezidae memiliki tubuh yang agak panjang dengan kakinya yang jangkung, dua kaki depannya lebih pendek dan sering diangkat-angkat ke depan. Kepalanya juga kecil yang lebih didominasi oleh kedua matanya.

Jika dilihat secara keseluruhan memang tidak jauh berbeda antara Neriidae dengan Micropezidae, hanya saja perbedaannya terlihat jelas pada bagian wajah mereka, karena Neriidae memiliki wajah yang tirus ke bawah.
