Lepidoptera of the genus Autochton (Eng) // Lepidópteros del género Autochton (Esp)

Greetings dear friends of the Hive platform, welcome to my little space dedicated to the world of arthropods. In this article we will share a series of photographs about the world of Lepidoptera, specifically, about a specimen of the family Hesperiidae.

Butterflies and moths, hexapod insects with a very diverse morphology and with more than 160,000 species distributed throughout the natural systems that make up our planet. These organisms stand out for their surprising delicacy and beauty, they are pollinators and excellent biological indicators.

From the point of view of agricultural sciences, they are harmful during their larval stages, since during these phases they are mandibulate insects that feed continuously on plant species in order to develop properly; once the metamorphosis process is completed, an adult lepidopteran will switch to feeding on nectar or may even stop feeding.

Lepidoptera are the second most numerous order in the insect world, being curiously more extensive the number of nocturnal lepidoptera compared to diurnal ones, an aspect that we practically cannot appreciate due to our visual limitations in the absence of light.

One of the best known families of these beautiful invertebrates is the Hesperiidae, which contains all those butterflies that people usually call "jumping", a nickname given by its type of flight, which is very fast and when moving from one plant to another, it seems to jump with different ranges. Likewise, these small butterflies always show how energetic they are, and when it is time to rest, there is no better hiding place than the underside of a leaf, which shows a lot of cunning on the part of these winged insects.

This small butterfly that I managed to photograph belongs to the subfamily Eudaminae, not a very numerous group, however, they have an estimated 50 taxonomically classified genera. One of these genera is Autochton, which is currently composed of approximately 14 species.

All specimens of this genus are very similar to each other, having slight differences in coloration and stripes along their wings.

The eye of a butterfly has more than 15,000 ommatidia (varies among species), each of them gives a perspective on their environment, reacting to stimuli caused by the lengths of light waves bouncing on the earth's surface. For this reason, at the evolutionary level they are above many arthropods in the visual aspect, although each one adapted in its own way to the blows dealt by the hostile ecosystem, the remarkable point of all this, is that insects in general are "works of art" that can be complicated to understand many times, but even so, they harbor much biological information with which we would simply live hallucinating every second of our lives.

Their mouthparts are elongated and retractile, which helps them to reach the nectar in the flowers with relative ease. Once it has been used, the insect tends to roll it up and hide it, thus preventing this specialized mouthpart from interfering with their flight or their mobility in general terms.

On the other hand, this lepidopteran Autochton cf. longipennis has a shade in which brown and black predominate, having two yellow lines located vertically on its forewings, while in the hind wings it only has yellow edges.

Other striking features are the orange color of its lower extremities, in addition to the fact that this specimen was missing an antenna, a piece that it probably lost while trying to escape from a predator. Its eyes have a red color, this coloration is given by the set of pigmented cells that divide each of the omatidia, in many insects other quite striking colors can be seen.

Butterflies in general, are excellent biological indicators within terrestrial ecosystems, the fact that you can see them fluttering around your garden is a positive aspect that indicates that it is an area with little environmental pollution. These arthropods are morphologically very delicate, besides being very susceptible to changes, however, they know very well how to take advantage of these weaknesses and turn them into strengths, so that once the pollution is captured, many of these organisms flee the place in search of a better area to feed, reproduce and give the ideal temporary place to their future generations.
