Snow is Warming??? - Winter's Here
If you've ever been caught out in the snow without adequate protection from the elements, you might be surprised to know that snow isn't as cold as you think!
Yet, because snow is 90-95% air, it's highly insulative. This is why many animals will build themselves snow caves for their hibernation. Similarly, the traditional igloo uses the same insulative properties to keep its inhabitants warm. Remember that "warmth" is relative - it might still be below freezing, so you're not going to be in t-shirt and shorts! However, your igloo just might save your life.
More than animals, a 10-12 inch layer of snow will keep the ground from freezing and protects the plants and roots below. Heavy snow on branches (especially those with leaves on them) can be very damaging, but the tree itself is likely to survive so long as it doesn't lose too many branches.
(My balcony, after a 25-inch blizzard in Casper, Wyoming, in March 2021.)
Some people like to heap snow against their houses to save money in heating. In any case, simply leaving the snow (if it's not too heavy, anyway) can help a lot like this guy explains.
The surface of the snow itself, however, reflects much of the sun's heat back into the atmosphere, so that part will be cooler. This reflection is what can give a skier a bad sunburn, even on a cloudy day.
Don't think that you can simply dig into the snow to wait out the passing blizzard. Breathing aside, snow is still water - and if the temperature is above freezing it's going to start melting, even a little bit. It's that combination of cold and damp that's particularly dangerous for humans.
There are two seasons in the Upper Peninsula... "winter's coming" and "winter's here." I like them both. This series is an excuse to make further use of my many snow pictures!
