Sony PlayStation 5 Reveals its Looks and Specs...

Well, It's finally the day where the folks at Sony have unveiled what the upcoming PlayStation 5 will look like as well as its hardware specifications.. And it appears that the internet isn't all to terribly impressed!

Hardware Specifications

CPU: AMD Zen 2-based CPU with 8 cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency)
GPU: 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency)
GPU architecture: Custom RDNA 2
Memory interface: 16GB GDDR6 / 256-bit
Memory bandwidth: 448GB/s
Internal storage: Custom 825GB SSD
IO throughput: 5.5GB/s (raw), typical 8-9GB/s (compressed)
Expandable storage: NVMe SSD slot
External storage: USB HDD support (PS4 games only)
Optical drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray drive

While the hardware specs are that of a medium grade gaming PC at an alleged $499 price point we'll likely see these fly off the shelf even if the specs are slightly lower than people were speculating. I found the availablility of an NVME SSD slot an interesting addition to the overall specs of the system as well as them utilizing a custom RDNA 2 based GPU. With no mention of how much dedicated video memeory though it could be interesting to see what developers are able to squeeze out of the system graphics wise.

While we've seen some serious hype around the graphics of the system ( mainly the Unreal Engine 4 tech demo ) what they showed us for launch exclusives didn't really seem too much of a step above current generation console gaming graphics wise which is kind of worrying. We really won't see what the console is truly capable of though until developers get accustomed to developing on this new hardware.

Oh, I'm so saving for one of these babies. Just worried about what the msrp is going to be. I'm hearing it will be less than the new Xbox. So south of $800.

$499 is the rumour I hear floating around the bowels of the internet. Which might make sense given the specs honestly.

The specs are about that of a mid grade gaming PC.. But the custom silicon hardware might out-perform a PC equivalent.. Won't know till I get my hands on one! :D

I can't say that I'm impressed at all yet. Console gaming has been about AAA quality games being exclusive to that system and that seems to be falling away in favor of more adoption for titles. The Bethesda titles looked alright but overall the games they showed left me with little desire for a limited system.
