Online grocery forecast increases to $143B by 2025 (GroceryDive)
- According to the updated predictions of FMI and Nielsen, online food and beverages sales will represent 30% of all omnichanncel food and beverage spending by 2025, reaching US$143bn.
- Shoppers aged 45-64 make up the largest number of onmichannel households, with spending growing c. US$20bn over the past two years (faster than younger generations).
- About 15% of Gen Z shoppers’ grocery budget is spent online while Millennial spend 26% on online food shops.
- It is worth noting that this is now the second time that FMI and Nielsen are updating their predictions of online sales: In 2017, Nielsen and FMI predicted that online grocery sales would hit US$100bn by 2025 which was then updated last year to “between 2022 and 2024”. So clearly the pace of adoption is accelerating.
- The latest update is due in part to the logistics and delivery infrastructures being put in place by retailers, with Nielsen/FMI listing an uptick in Amazon Prime members as well as greater adoption of click-and-collect by retailers and meal kit deliveries among several other reasons for the shift in their predictions.
