The Future Of Meat: 3D Printed

Would you eat a steak that was 3D printed?

This is a question that we are all likely to be confronted with in the next few years.

3D printing is affecting numerous industries. Food production is no different. Now that there are a number of options for "plant-based" meat, the formula is already set.

What this means is that 3D printers could be added to the mix to produce the meats a lot less expensively.

What we are looking at has the potential to completely disrupt the food industry. Many ranchers are going to be threatened by this simply because of all the negatives that are associated with the present way we "develop" meat.

In addition to land, there is a lot of drinking water that is used for the cows. At the same time, a great deal of agriculture is spent on growing grain for cows to eat.

One of the biggest reasons for the quest to add technology to the process of food production is to increase the output. With a growing population, we are in need of greater production. Ideas such as 3D printing enables the ability to speed up the process.

Traditional ranching requires a couple years from calf to slaughter. This is a process that is just too slow. Nature set the time table and it is not speeding up. Technology is looking to increase the pace of development.

We will likely see all the major food producers jump on board with these different technologies. Over time, their processes will be altered as they are implemented into their business models.

By 2030, I would expect the majority of our food will come from sources outside where they do today. Meat is going to see a radical change over the next decade. From a practical to humanitarian standpoint, we are going to see the flaws in our present ranching and agricultural system.

That's one step closer to what we see in Star Trek. I'm okay with that.

But I think traditional methods will continue because I'm the type that think catastrophic events could neuter tech for an extended time.

I agree with you @enforcer48 about the traditional methods being around a while but not for the reason you cite. I think it will be our unwillingness to change and the fact that the existing companies benefiting from the present system will do all they can to stop/slow the process down.

The catastrophic event is less likely as decentralization takes over. With more moving to the edges, this single point of failure is reduced.

I realize 3D printing is a game changer, but didn't even think it might be a game changer for humanity as well.

Yes it does tend to get lost in the technology discussions but there are so many sectors that 3D printing is starting to affect. If the pace keeps going, with how broad it is in its reach, that means it will affect humanity like never envisioned.

I'm deeply overwhelmed by your depth of research. It quite inspires me. BTW: where do you dig information from?

Whilst I'll totally agree with you on the need for technological application in food production for precision in production and processing. I'm still imagining the 3D printer use case in meat production and my concerns are highlighted below. I think I'll deepen my research.

Food production is no different. Now that there are a number of options for "plant-based" meat, the formula is already set.

Agreed on this, In fact, plant based protein is better for the body. While we are having urbanization today, do we think that there will be enough plants to cater for the millions of tonnes of demand for meat?

What this means is that 3D printers could be added to the mix to produce the meats a lot less expensively.

How will this affect price?

Ultimately it will have downward pressure on the price of food. All of this is in the testing stage which will be followed by the fight to scale. However, once we start to see some of this at scale, pricing pressures will head down.

I would saw by the end of this decade, things will be radically different with food production.

@taskmaster4450le it is amazing how 3D technology is really creating alot of innovative development in our society most especially with the things it can be used for....this is an amazing 3D printing in display.....
