Too darn hot

avatar

I'm sure plenty of people around the world will say this is nothing, but the UK had its highest July temperatures ever yesterday. I know other places get much hotter, but this sort of trend should be a big cause for concern. UK records have been broken several times in the last few years. It's already causing issues with railways failing as they were not designed for such temperatures. It will affect agriculture and our homes are not built for it. Very few homes have a/c and that can make things worse as more energy is required. The heat can kill a lot of vulnerable elderly people.

We are lucky it is not lasting too long. We have rain again today that has cooled it down.

Some will blame natural variations, but scientists agree we have played a part. This site has plenty of information. A lot of those saying humans are not to blame seem to have vested interests in fossil fuels. Exxon knew the risks decades ago, but kept their research to themselves whilst sowing doubt.

We have to hope there is some chance to reduce the likely effects, but it needs action right now. Some accuse groups like Extinction Rebellion of being extremists, but we should be panicking.

Do what you can.

I think prolonged pressure on our politicians and legislators would help. Interesting that in all the spending plans mentioned by our new PM I don't recall anything about the environment.

We're seeing his true colours. Like others he lacks the courage to do the right things. Wrong priorities

40°C here at Germany. That's way to much for me :D

Wow, that's got to be hard to bear. You have my sympathy. Germany has been ahead of others in environmental issues.

I have never felt such heat in the UK such as yesterday. 33.5C when we left work or so my car told me.

We had booked a game of golf, my shirt was visibly soaked with sweat after hitting 50 range balls as a warm up.

I didn't even take snaps for a write up.. such was the heat. Completely different today.. much nicer out there.

It was like an oven when I walked out of work. At least the office was cool. I got a lift home as the trains were messed up. Had a swim to cool down. My other half was in the pool just before bed to try to relieve the heat, but it was not a comfortable night.

Fake news, all fake news 😜 when the UK is hotter than Portugal, something is REALLY messed up!

How hot will Portugal get? There will be more big fires. Heard the story about boiling a frog?

Fires for sure, but only because the idiots in charge keep making the same mistakes over and over, it's painful to see how the base problems stay unsolved year after year. In some regions we can reach over 40 degrees, but it's being a strange summer until now. What's that about frog boiling? 😂

There's some story that if you put a frog in a pot and heart it up it won't try to get out. I don't recommend trying that. Apart from warming we are polluting air, water and ground whilst destroying habitats for a quick buck. Greed will kill us somehow.

I think mother Nature knows what to do. History repeats itself and the temp doesn't bother me at all.

I live without a fridge, airco etc and the only thing I am afraid of is the cold/winter.

I think nature is messed up as we have pushed her too far. We have to care about things other than making money. We cannot replace lost species and habitats.

Already for billion of years we loose species and that is normal, nature, survival of the fittest.

Nature is not more messed up as at the Maya lived. What do you think was the reason they suddenly did not exist?

I agree we do live in a messy world full of waste.
How many electric things you own?
Do you use electricity, gas, etc?
How frequently do you buy clothes, other things?
Ever threw food away.
Do you grow your own food/are you self providing?
We all are big spenders and users and no matter if it stops today Mother Nature will do what she does, same routine, same circle of life.

You can plant a tree but that will not help the first 5-10 years. Better not ask how much poison a cut tree sets free in the air.

Is human kind worth saving?
The earth will be eating by the sun in future. This is scientifically proved (search the internet) and has nothing to do with our life style. It is part of nature, the universe and we are just a tiny part of it.

Ever asked yourself how many C02 humans produce by breathing, how many animals produce?
The environment is big business and soon animals will be forbidden too.

You never wonder why so many cities and governments keep cutting down trees? How come the needed plants are not there? Parks, gardens on roofs, etc

We have billions of years before we need to worry about the sun. Species are going extinct faster than ever, short of a giant meteor or super-volcano. Everything we do has an impact, but we are using up resources too fast. If everyone used as much as those in the USA things would be so much worse, but that is the lifestyle many aspire to.

I stopped eating meat over 25 years ago. I don't buy any more stuff than I need, but I don't live in a cave. We can live well with less.

We humans are amazing, but we only have this one planet and have to decide if it is worth saving.

Nope... I won't sya it's nothing..

35 is hot even by Malaysian standards.. And we're right under the sun on the equator.

It's a different kind of hot too.. Here in malaysia it's the sun that's hot. But I imagined there it's the air itself and its sorta feels like it a stuffy sauna what with the humidity there.

I've not felt heat like that in the UK before. I've been to a few hot countries, but it's different when you are on holiday. We will have to adapt to cope with this in years to come.

All the best with that. Seriously..

Id love to be wrong but I'm pretty sure that we humans have crossed the line of no return for our climate.

I personally am looking at north Canada or Siberia as a possiblr refuge when the world is hot enough that the ice there melts. Some say new arable land will open up there.

You are right, those temps are pretty normal here, but we have A/C in a lot of areas. I can't imagine having to deal with those kinds of temps and not having A/C. Even if you have a fan it is just hot air blowing on you. You might as well just have someone breathe in your face :P It is sad that more people aren't paying attention especially given the increase in quantity and strength of hurricanes that come out of the Atlantic the past couple of years. Change is definitely happening.

I don't even have working a/c in my car, but I don't drive much. We are seeing more extreme weather events. That should be enough evidence for anyone.

@steevc, how is something like this going to be enforced. Companies have profits at the forefront of their business. so then its up to governments to enforce, but even they are reluctant as it puts them/their companies at a disadvantage against others that may enforcing it either. what good is an external body such as the Paris agreement, which countries such as the main polluters can just show 2 fingers to... I'm afraid nothing short of an alien intelligent race coming down with zappers can save us now.

It is definitely not easy, but some countries have taken measures to improve matters. Even the UK has more or less stopped burning coal for power. This is why I say we need brave leaders who will take the difficult decisions rather than populists. Trump is in the pocket of the Koch brothers and other polluters. He has to be called out on this. Changes will mean difficult times, but then Boris seems happy to risk that for his precious Brexit.

Yeah @steevc, no air conditioning in my office at work so yesterday was pretty grim. I had to go out at lunch time and buy some deodorant, for fear of offending my closest colleagues!

That's a normal summer on TO. And it sucks. Lately we've had some crazy 40+'s..

Say what you will about the cause, bit I've noticed an upward trend. And the hot season is longer now..

We've had record lows the last two mornings in the central plains of the united snakes.
@jang has videos saying the grand solar minimum is going to be a bear.
Droughts and floods where the food grows now, greening of deserts with a few more years.

There will be local variations. That's how weather works. The sun is cooling, but scientists say it will not counteract the human-induced trend. Changing local climate will result in mass migrations. Those we have seen so far will seem minor. How will the 'deniers' in the US explain away this. They keep delaying action.
