NEW APPROACHES NEEDED IN EDUCATION SYSTEM

Today, there are more persons embracing education than there were at the beginning of the decade. As a result, the reach of education is increasing. Nevertheless, there are yet important issues to be addressed so as to ensure an inclusive quality education.
However, the very beginning of failure in education system in the society is linked to poor leadership and poor accountability. Pathetically, many teachers are merely perfunctory teachers, having no interest for capacity development in their students, thus, constituting a weak structure in management. Also sadly, is the fact that some teachers are promoted with no promotion test, causing a mellow down in their professionalism and integrity.

Moreover, in the then education system, an individual student learned a specific skill, thereafter was enrolled into the working world. But how sustainable is that to an individual in the world of today where automation is fast displacing many jobs?. Thus, this calls for an urgent need for professionals to develop new skillsets on daily basis.

Learning practices should be accessible online via YouTube and other platforms to encourage students to learn on their own, given specific guidance. Online courses should be encouraged, certified and recognised. Priorities should be given to personal skill development.

There is no doubt that what an individual sees can affect his thoughts and acts, and can he can memorize it for a long period of time, as such, students should be exposed to the visual aspect of what they are taught. Every subject should be taught artistically, using movement, drawing, painting, music, storytelling and rhythm, thus developing a sense of wonder and joy of learning.

Moreover, education system should be such that is based on an understanding that the key to developing problem solving skills is an active imagination and a commitment to pursuing one's purpose in life. Curriculum should be reviewed periodically to accommodate new development in various fields, and should be carefully balanced in academic, artistic, and practical activities to stimulate the imagination and prepare the students for life.

The system should be very friendly and professionals of proven integrities should be employed as teachers. They should be trained and retrained for greater productivity. Their compensation should never be overemphasised, for their encouragement.

Furthermore, students should be encouraged to view education as a seamless patchwork connecting all subjects, instead of compartmentalising the offering of various subjects.

Students' achievement should be improved as a way to increase productivity through competency based learning, personalised learning, use of technology in teaching and learning, new and alternative sources of students' support and funding, attractive and comfortable place of learning, reward for excellence, among others.
