Personal Development: Math Refresher

In an attempt to distract myself from the imminent demise of our republic, I opened up a text on differential equations to see how much I remembered. I have concluded there was very little for me to remember since I learned so little in the first place. I had a combined course with half linear algebra, half diffeqs. I aced the linear algebra portion, made it through simple separable diffeqs, then cried the rest of the semester (I might have even fainted during Laplace transforms.) So I got a C in the course, having mastered linear algebra and disgraced myself in diffeqs.

I passed an actuarial exam in similar fashion. The old, old Society of Actuaries Exam 3 combined Business Stats (Yay!) Operations Research (Yay!) and Numerical Methods (another thing that made me cry.) As Meatloaf said "..two out of three ain't bad,"(1) so I passed the exam.

I still feel like an imposter sometimes when I look at my Purdue diploma. I did excel at some subjects: FORTRAN, engineering cost analysis, simulations. But not differential equations.

Hello!! I was just browsing and was tickled by your post. I love mathematics as a subject, but I notice with myself that when I neglect to keep it in mind, I also feel like an imposter. "Oh... I thought I was the 'math girl'..." A little curious practicing and refresher never hurt though! I'm happy to read you picked some of it up in the meantime. :)

Nice to meet you. And thanks for stopping by. We math girls need to stick together.
