Also, the solution to being unable to have a generator in your backyard is to make sure your generator is covert. If your 'crime' of supplying your own necessary goods and services is unknown, no one will force you to stop it.

I am always appreciative of your good advice, and do not disparage it. Lots of Ukrainians had gardens before the Bolsheviks starved millions of them to death, and it is critically relevant to consider how to provide necessary goods and services even if that kind of oppression happens again.
The Holodomor succeeded by preventing people from growing their own food. Today in Oregon it is illegal to capture rainwater falling on your roof. Failing to ensure that your means of producing goods necessary to your survival are unknown to oppressors will paint a target on those means and make them easy to seize or destroy.
Cryptic facilities to provide critical food, energy, water and other goods necessary for survival are essential, and modern technology like CRISPR, aquaponics, and 3d printing enable such production to be covert, rather than obvious targets of thugs intent on making us dependent on them, and thus vulnerable to their depredations.
