Big Win for Clean Energy: Renewables Now Top Coal Globally

avatar

In the first half of 2025, renewable energy sources produced more electricity globally than coal for the first time. (ecologi.com)
This isn’t just a symbolic milestone. It means:

  • Solar + wind + other renewables are winning the battle of generation more than we’ve ever seen.
  • The cost of renewables keeps dropping, making them increasingly the smart choice vs fossil fuels. (AP News)
  • The energy transition is finally showing signs of scaling, not just good headlines.

Why this is good to all of us

Pretty obvious I would say:

  • Clean-energy tech is entering the “buy it because it’s cheaper” phase, not just “buy it because it’s right”. That opens up real market opportunities.
  • From a branding/positioning standpoint: businesses that lean into renewables can claim cost-leadership + future readiness.
  • On the risk side: if coal is becoming the weaker play, the companies stuck there may face stranded-asset challenges. That means sales professionals who understand the new energy order will be in demand.
  • For the planet: A shift from “if” to “when” in the energy transition is significant. Still massive work ahead, but this is a positive signal.

Caveats (because yes, life is complicated)

  • Renewables beating coal doesn’t mean ALL fossil fuels are out — natural gas, oil and supply-chain issues still loom.
  • Infrastructure, grid stability, storage remain big challenges (you know this because you deal with tech & innovation).
  • Some regions are still lagging. So the transition is uneven.
  • “Good news” ≠ solved. This is a win in a complex game, not a check-mate.

Might works in certain regions, in others not (like middle Europe), despite heavily pushed. And windmills have a lot of environmental dangers.
In this calculation, only the power generation was counted. But what about the total costs to make this power including all the subsidies to push that technology and the fossile power plants to keep in reserve as backup in case no sun is shining and no wind?
So in summary "Big win" for the climate change lobby but not for the planet.

Fair points — the energy transition absolutely has regional differences and real costs. But globally, the trend still matters. Renewables passing coal in total generation shows how quickly technology and economics are shifting.
Sure, subsidies and backup systems play a role, but so did they for fossil fuels for decades — from tax breaks to infrastructure investment. The real story is that renewable power keeps getting cheaper, cleaner, and more scalable over time.

Not perfect yet, but definitely progress for both the climate and the planet.

I don´t see that windmills get cleaner, so all in all I don´t agree with you.
The planet would benefit way more if e.g. the rainforests would no longer be destroyed or the oceans pulluted, but apparently all focus is on climate.

True - it started with killing forests and polluting the sea - fear not step back or rebuilding doable.
