Language is a social construction that over the centuries has become entangled in such a way that we live subjected and entangled among so many signs, words and norms that, in an extreme situation, we have metadiscursive situations that seek to sustain the meaning and coherence of what is spoken.

More than speakers we must refer to participants, who produce linguistic activities that consist of creating meanings even if they are incoherent. It may even that what is said is not fully known by one of them, that is, not knowing what they are talking about. However, there is the possibility that we participate half, as long as we are able to intervene with a certain opportunity to be understood or at least reciprocated in social exchanges.

In this case, we could enter the affective dimension, where language acquires purely expressive tonalities, such as silence, clumsiness in speaking, cut sentences, running out of words, confusion, hesitation, mistrust and insecurities.

The true and the false
What we say can be true or false. According to the old precepts of logical positivism, a sentence would be meaningless if it cannot be verifiable, that is if it could not be verified whether it was true or incorrect.

The language philosopher Austin John Langshaw (1911-1962), who since 1955 studied the way in which words are used to clarify meanings in everyday speech, had questioned the long-held idea among positivist theorists of language that the only way to verify the facts was the criterion of truth, that is, the existence of a logical correspondence between the words and the world that is presented to us.

Austin made the keen observation that there are utterances that show sense and coherence, and yet their truth could not be verified. Austin called these sentence statements performative, compared to others that could be verifiable in their truth or falsehood, which he called constative.

In the case of constants, these are used to describe certain situations and things, that is, here the criterion of objectivity, a basic principle of factual science, which determines the truth or falsity of the facts, would deprive. In performatives, events are not described but acts. From this contrast between the performative and the constative, Austin arrives at the formulation of the general theory of speech acts.

Strength, happiness, and misfortune theory
Hence, Austin introduces the concept of linguistic happiness into his theory. Starting from the performatives, although these cannot be considered true or false, they can be unfortunate or unhappy, that is, they can go wrong. If they go well, then the act is happy. Austin then raises his "Theory of misfortunes", where the various possibilities of linguistic unhappiness are classified and pointed out, such as mistakes, confusion, misunderstandings, ambiguities, entanglements and all sorts of modes of phonetic and semantic subversion.

In the examples provided by Austin (1971), expressions such as How cold it is here! Out of context, in normal conditions, this expression says something about the temperature, but said by a speaker in a real communication situation, it is possible that he says what he says literally, but also other intentions that are not part of the literal meaning.

If the listener or recipient of the message performs an action, such as closing a window or regulating the air conditioning thermostat, in this case the intention of the speaker is fulfilled in pragmatic terms, so it can be said that the speech act was happy, by a statement that meant more than the statement that it was cold. The fact of the existence of contents that are not in the sentence, that is, of what is not said, indicates that interpreting a sentence is not the same as interpreting a sentence.

The so-called linguistic misfortune is not actually subject to the bad correspondence between language and truth, but rather to the mismatch between what the statement says it does and what it actually does (Austin, 1971).

In practice, says Austin, it is possible that the difference between the performative and the constative can sometimes be dispelled. If someone apologizes, the act of apologizing will depend on whether the performance "I apologize" is happy or lucky, that is, there is a way to verify whether the statement is true or false. On the other hand, if it is stated: “Juan runs”, the truth or falsehood will depend on the verification that Juan is running.

Now, the differences or contrasts are diluted and connected to each other in the constant expression "John runs" with the statement "I am stating that John runs." The same happens with the "I apologize" that depends on whether the statement is happy. On the other hand, there are indirect happy speech acts, for example, when we ask to ask and deny to affirm.

In another example, Austin shows the performative "I warn you that the bull is about to attack you", where if the bull is not really about to carry out the attack on the interlocutor, then it can be said that the warning was false or wrong, or even insincere or null, which shows that the considerations that indicate the fortune or misfortune of the statements can, in some way "contaminate" or "invade" statements that can be verified as true or false (Austin, 1971), with which it is admitted that Sentences that affirm truths or falsehoods, also serve to fulfill acts, although they do not have explicit performatives. It's raining is an affirmation, although it does not contain the verb affirm (Reyes, 1994).

The act by which meaning is produced in the statements is the locutionary. In this sense, philosophers of language call illocutionary force what a statement does through what is said, as long as the necessary conditions are met for a happy linguistic act to take place.

The meaning of force is what the words say. The force of the enunciation is what the words do (forgive, swear, affirm, promise, warn, among others). A third type of force is perlocutionary, which corresponds to the effect it produces on the interlocutor: convincing him, frightening him, surprising him, seducing him (Reyes, 1994).

Curiously, due to the existence of linguistic misfortunes, we ask ourselves, how is it possible that we can communicate under these conditions? This is because the human being has communication skills and competences that we have been learning throughout our social life.

In short, we learn and create, recreate and remake language thanks to linguistic creativity to transform and mold it to each event, situations and occurrences that social behaviors force us to do.
