La ciencia y poesía de los crepúsculos/ The science and poetry of twilights
All of us have ever experienced that feeling charged with melancholy, that special nostalgia that surrounds a sunset, the final hour of the day just before turning into night. At that time, our fatigue becomes the peaceful atmosphere of rest for the sun-blinded eyesight and those fleeting moments are the beginning of love, sensuality and the enjoyment of the mystery that the entrance of the shadows holds.
We are talking about twilights, those that have been a source of inspiration for poets, musicians, singers, painters, photographers and filmmakers. The great poet Pablo Neruda, from a very young age, had already sung to him at twilight, as well as Antonio Machado, Alberti, Alfonsina Storni, Luis Cernuda, Jorge Luis Borges and many who have had twilight as poetic figures, those fleeting visions of beautiful morning or evening colors and glows that are observed with charm and enthusiasm, as one of the most suggestive celestial wonders of nature.
Sin estar fuera de las visiones poéticas de los cantores, esos momentos especiales que forman parte de los mecanismos lumínicos pueden ser explicados por la ciencia en su dimensión óptica. El solo nombre latino crepuscŭlum evoca poética y científicamente su significado: “Claridad que hay desde que raya el día hasta que sale el sol, y desde que este se pone hasta que es de noche”, de acuerdo con el Diccionario de la Real Academia Española.
Without being outside the poetic visions of the singers, those special moments that are part of the light mechanisms can be explained by science in its optical dimension. The single Latin name crepuscŭlum poetically and scientifically evokes its meaning: "There is clarity from the daylight until the sun rises, and from when the sun sets until it is night", according to the Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy .
Si queremos abundar un poco más diremos que su origen etimológico es incierto, lo que añade aun más su misterio. Se sabe documentado como proto indo-europeo y de raíz del griego antiguo -knéphas, “oscuridad”, “noche”, “de origen oscuro” y de-culum “amanecer” (Diccionario Webster). Originados por la luz del sol que se refracta en todas direcciones, ilumina las capas de la atmósfera por encima del horizonte poco antes del comienzo de las sombras de la noche o al final de estas, es decir antes del alba.
If we want to elaborate a little more, we will say that its etymological origin is uncertain, which adds even more its mystery. It is known documented as proto Indo-European and from the ancient Greek root -knéphas, "darkness", "night", "of dark origin" and de-culum "dawn" (Webster's Dictionary). Originating from the light of the sun that is refracted in all directions, it illuminates the layers of the atmosphere above the horizon shortly before the beginning of the night shadows or at the end of these, that is to say before dawn.
Un poco de ciencia
En términos técnicos de la óptica atmosférica, disciplina que busca de comprender las causas de los distintos fenómenos ópticos que ocurren en la atmósfera terrestre, el poético crepúsculo determina entonces el lapso en el cual el sol está debajo del horizonte, pero a pesar de ello sigue iluminando el cielo.
A little science
In technical terms of atmospheric optics, a discipline that seeks to understand the causes of the different optical phenomena that occur in the earth's atmosphere, the poetic twilight then determines the period in which the sun is below the horizon, but despite this it continues lighting up the sky.
Dependiendo de esa posición, el crepúsculo adquiere distintas denominaciones:
- Crepúsculo civil: cuando el Sol se sitúa entre los 0º y los -6º de altura sobre el horizonte. En estos puntos la luz ambiental se hace muy tenue y ya no se distingue una hebra de hilo blanco y de uno negro, además de que ya no permite leer al aire libre.
- Crepúsculo náutico: entre -6º y -12º. Solo pueden distinguirse sombras imprecisas de los objetos.
- Crepúsculo astronómico: entre -12º y -18º. A partir de ese momento da lugar a la “noche cerrada” (Kutxa, 2020).
Depending on that position, twilight acquires different names:
- Civil twilight: when the Sun is between 0º and -6º above the horizon. At these points the ambient light becomes very dim and you can no longer distinguish a strand of white thread and a black one, in addition to that it no longer allows you to read outdoors.
- Nautical twilight: between -6º and -12º. Only imprecise shadows of objects can be distinguished.
- Astronomical twilight: between -12º and -18º. From that moment on it gives rise to the “closed night” (Kutxa, 2020).
There are other optical phenomena associated with twilights, although they are due to other causes, such as rainbows and northern and southern auroras, twilight arcs, purple light, the shadow of the Earth and the belt of Venus or anticrepuscular arc, the scattering of Rayleigh, halos, blushes, crowns, mirages, the effect of Nova Zembla and Fata Morgana and other phenomena, these varying depending on the atmospheric particles in suspension and their temperature, as well as the optical geometry and viewing angles.
Los colores de los crepúsculos
Durante el amanecer o el ocaso la luz del sol atraviesa la atmósfera, dispersándose la luz solar de frecuencia más alta en un punto de mayor espesor, tomando un color rojizo y cambiar a una profusión de colores como anaranjado, morado y amarillo. Algunas partículas en suspensión de la atmósfera dispersan distintos colores en diversos ángulos, creando los radiantes espectáculos lumínicos de extraordinaria belleza.
The colors of twilights
During sunrise or sunset, sunlight passes through the atmosphere, scattering higher frequency sunlight at a point of greater thickness, turning reddish and changing to a profusion of colors such as orange, purple, and yellow. Some suspended particles in the atmosphere scatter different colors at different angles, creating radiant light shows of extraordinary beauty.
El color verde se produce poco después del atardecer o antes del amanecer, cuando es visible por encima del sol y por lo general no dura más de dos segundos, muy difícil de apreciar, dependiendo de las condiciones atmosféricas. Se dice que es el último color que se puede ver al finalizar el crepúsculo astronómico.
The green color occurs shortly after sunset or before sunrise, when it is visible above the sun and usually does not last more than two seconds, very difficult to appreciate, depending on the atmospheric conditions. It is said to be the last color that can be seen at the end of astronomical twilight.
En muchos lugares del mundo puede apreciarse este fenómeno celeste de luz y color, así como otros fenómenos de mayor o menor intensidad dependiendo de la latitud del lugar y la altura de la observación.
In many parts of the world, this celestial phenomenon of light and color can be appreciated, as well as other phenomena of greater or lesser intensity depending on the latitude of the place and the height of the observation.
Una ciudad de crepúsculos en el Caribe
Desde muchos lugares del mundo se pueden avistar los crepúsculos y su indescriptible belleza cambiante y efímera. En la Suramérica caribeña, hay una ciudad particularmente señalada como uno de los sitios más subyugantes de observación de esta poesía lumínica. Es en una ciudad llamada Barquisimeto, capital del estado Lara, situada al occidente de Venezuela.
A city of twilights in the Caribbean
From many parts of the world you can see the twilights and their indescribable changing and ephemeral beauty. In Caribbean South America, there is a city that is particularly noted as one of the most captivating sites for observing this light poetry. It is in a city called Barquisimeto, capital of the Lara state, located in western Venezuela.
Se le ha ponderado desde tiempos muy antiguos como un sitio de notables inspiraciones por sus ocasos y atardeceres de seductores refulgencias. Se ha explicado que esta privilegiada ciudad recibe tales despedidas del día debido a la posición hacia el occidente del lago de Maracaibo, que sirve de “espejo” para la reflexión de los rayos del sol sobre los celajes observados desde Barquisimeto.
It has been considered since ancient times as a site of notable inspirations for its sunsets and sunsets of seductive effulgence. It has been explained that this privileged city receives such goodbyes of the day due to the position to the west of Lake Maracaibo, which serves as a "mirror" for the reflection of the sun's rays on the clouds observed from Barquisimeto.
Tan subyugantes son tales fulgores cósmicos que se cuenta que, en 1813, luego de sufrir la aplastante derrota de sus tropas donde perecieron más de 1.000 soldados en la confusa retirada de un acometimiento bélico en un sitio llamado Tierritas Blancas en Barquisimeto, Simón Bolívar hubo de exclamar que bien había valido la pena haber perdido una batalla el contemplar un crepúsculo barquisimetano.
So subjugating are such cosmic gleams that it is said that, in 1813, after suffering the crushing defeat of his troops where more than 1,000 soldiers perished in the confused retreat of a war attack in a place called Tierritas Blancas in Barquisimeto, Simón Bolívar had to exclaim that it had been well worth having lost a battle to contemplate a Barquisimetan twilight.
