Todo hablante transmite e interpreta significados lingüísticos, unas veces sobre nuestras percepciones, bien sean físicas o mentales, sentimientos, emociones y otras veces sobre nuestras relaciones y actitudes con los interlocutores, sean estas reales o fingidas.

Every speaker transmits and interprets linguistic meanings, sometimes about our perceptions, whether physical or mental, feelings, emotions and other times about our relationships and attitudes with the interlocutors, whether these are real or feigned.

Cuando queremos iniciar una conversación cotidiana de tipo social, la interacción más sencilla consiste en el deseo de buscar información y a la vez establecer algún tipo de relación entre los participantes. Es la que se da, por ejemplo, entre el comerciante y el cliente: “¿En qué puedo servirle, señor?” Aquí primariamente se indaga sobre una respuesta acorde con las necesidades del cliente e iniciar así un sistema de intercambio de significaciones.

When we want to start a daily conversation of a social nature, the simplest interaction consists of the desire to seek information and at the same time establish some kind of relationship between the participants. It is the one that occurs, for example, between the merchant and the customer: "How can I help you, sir?" Here, it is primarily inquired about a response in accordance with the client's needs and thus initiating a system of exchange of meanings.

Para expresar esos significados, el lenguaje, obviamente, debe estar codificado, esto es, establecido de común acuerdo entre los hablantes, por medio de complejos mecanismos formados por diferentes niveles: gramaticales, fónicos, léxicos, sintácticos y semánticos.

To express these meanings, the language, obviously, must be codified, that is, established by common agreement between the speakers, through complex mechanisms formed by different levels: grammatical, phonic, lexical, syntactic and semantic.

Sin embargo, en la comunicación verbal no todo el significado de lo que decimos está en las oraciones expresadas. Cuando se habla algo, por lo general, se dice más de lo que literalmente se presenta o se quiere decir otra cosa o no se entendió.

However, in verbal communication not all the meaning of what we say is in the expressed sentences. When something is spoken, in general, more is said than is literally presented or something else is meant or is not understood.

Si en la oración Qué frío hace aquí consideramos que esta emisión hace referencia a algo sobre la temperatura en un recinto o lugar determinado, tenemos entonces que en cierto contexto quiere decir exactamente eso y además otras cosas que no forman parte del significado literal de la oración (Reyes, 1994).

If in the sentence "How cold it is here" we consider that this emission refers to something about the temperature in a certain room or place, then we have that in a certain context it means exactly that and also other things that are not part of the literal meaning of the sentence (Reyes, 1994).

Dentro de lo que no se percibe en lo literal estaría el hecho de expresar una petición, por ejemplo, de que se regule el termostato del aire acondicionado o que se cierre una ventana, si fuere el caso. Aquí se muestra el llamado, esto es que se manipule el termostato o que se cierre la ventana. En este caso el acto de pedir se ha cumplido por medio de una afirmación que involucraba más que una simple aseveración sobre la temperatura.

Among what is not perceived literally would be the fact of expressing a request, for example, that the air conditioning thermostat be regulated or that a window be closed, if that is the case. Here is the call this is that the thermostat is manipulated or the window is closed. In this case the act of asking has been accomplished by means of a statement that involved more than a simple statement about temperature.

En otras situaciones o contextos, el hablante pudo haber tenido otra intención, digamos, por ejemplo, irónica, por el hecho de que en realidad estaba haciendo mucho calor y el enunciado diría algo más, algo discrepante, lo que exige otras inferencias para su interpretación, bien sea humorística, de intercambio emocional de amistad o intimidad entre los hablantes e incluso la misma intención afirmativa expresada en las líneas anteriores.

In other situations or contexts, the speaker may have had another intention, say, for example, ironic, due to the fact that it was actually very hot and the statement would say something else, something discrepant, which requires other inferences for its interpretation either humorous, an emotional exchange of friendship or intimacy between the speakers and even the same affirmative intention expressed in the previous lines.

Los actos de habla
Estas consideraciones exponen lo que en la pragmática lingüística se denomina actos de habla y otras manifestaciones que complementan los estudios sociolingüísticos y formales del lenguaje, tales como la sintaxis, la gramática y la semántica.

Speech acts
These considerations expose what in linguistic pragmatics are called speech acts and other manifestations that complement formal and sociolinguistic studies of language, such as syntax and semantics and grammar.

Los actos de habla son uno de esos principios pragmáticos que postula que hablar es actuar o hacer algo. Con el habla (y el lenguaje en general) hacemos cosas: perdonamos, juramos, prometemos, pedimos, informamos, absolvemos, bautizamos, bendecimos, amenazamos, declaramos, negamos, ordenamos, ironizamos, de acuerdo con las intenciones de quien realiza el acto de habla.

Speech acts are one of those pragmatic principles that postulates that speaking is acting or doing something. With speech (and language in general) we do things: we forgive, we swear, we promise, we ask, we inform, we absolve, we baptize, we bless, we threaten, we declare, we deny, we order, we ironize, in accordance with the intentions of the person who performs the act of speaks.

En un matrimonio el acto de habla se cumple cuando el contrayente responde a la usual pregunta ritual y legal de estos casos: - ¿Recibe usted por esposo/esposa a X? y se contesta . Igualmente, cuando el sacerdote recita el enunciado de -Yo te bautizo en el nombre del Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. (Reyes, op.cit. 1994).

In a marriage, the speech act is fulfilled when the contracting party responds to the usual ritual and legal question in these cases: - "Do you receive X as husband / wife?" and the answer is "Yes". Similarly, when the priest recites the statement of -I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Reyes, op.cit. 1994).

Sin embargo, el significado atribuido a tales actos de habla solo se completa en sí mismo, tal como dice Austin (1971), en una “situación de habla total”: la fórmula ¿Recibe usted por esposo/esposa a X? y que el novio conteste , ha de ser dicha por el desposado y no por un testigo, un actor que haga el papel del contrayente o el padrino de la boda, así como en el caso del bautizo debe ser el propio sacerdote quien exprese “yo te bautizo…” y no otra persona ajena al clero.

However, the meaning attributed to such speech acts only completes itself, as Austin (1971) puts it, in a “total speech situation”: the formula "Do you receive X for husband / wife?" and that the groom answers Yes, it must be said by the bridegroom and not by a witness, an actor who plays the role of the contracting party or the best man of the wedding, as well as in the case of the baptism, the priest himself must express “ I baptize you…” and not another person outside the clergy.

La pragmática
Se hace necesario delimitar lo que es la pragmática, que en líneas generales es la disciplina lingüística que estudia el lenguaje en acción social, en cómo los hablantes como seres humanos interpretamos el lenguaje en función de la comunicación (Reyes, op.cit. 1994).

Pragmatics
It is necessary to define what pragmatics is, which in general is the linguistic discipline that studies language in social action, in how speakers as human beings interpret language in terms of communication (Reyes, op.cit. 1994) .

La pragmática surge de la necesidad de encontrarle un sentido a la conducta lingüística desde etapas puramente especulativas, es decir desde los fundamentos de la filosofía (Austin, 1965; Grice, 1967; Searle, 1969). La pragmática se dirige a examinar la manera como el hablante-participante asume formas de producir significados no totalmente lingüísticos, es decir no necesariamente incluidos en el sistema natural de la lengua.

Pragmatics arises from the need to find meaning in linguistic behavior from purely speculative stages, that is, from the foundations of philosophy (Austin, 1965; Grice, 1967; Searle, 1969). Pragmatics is aimed at examining the way the speaker-participant assumes ways of producing meanings that are not totally linguistic, that is, not necessarily included in the natural system of language.

Tomemos, por ejemplo, en el contexto de una reunión social, el momento en que la esposa le dice al marido - ¿Tú sabes qué hora es? El consorte puede interpretar que la mujer quiere irse a casa y responde: -Nos vamos cuando tú quieras, o algo semejante, en lugar de decirle la hora.

Take, for example, in the context of a social gathering, the moment when the wife says to the husband - "Do you know what time it is? The consort can interpret that the woman wants to go home and responds: -We leave whenever you want, or something similar, instead of telling her the time.

En términos semánticos no hay nada propiamente lingüístico que señale lo que entendió el marido a la pregunta de la esposa. Cabría la posibilidad de que la mujer, previendo la intención de la pregunta, pueda agregar: -No, no quiero irme, solo te preguntaba la hora, anulando así la significación implicada, sin contradecirse. Puede que el significado real que el hombre haya inferido sea el que la esposa le insinuó en la pregunta.

In semantic terms, there is nothing properly linguistic that indicates what the husband understood to the wife's question. It would be possible that the woman, anticipating the intention of the question, could add: -No, I don't want to leave, I was just asking you the time, thus canceling the implied meaning, without contradicting herself. The actual meaning that the man has inferred may be the one that the wife hinted at in the question.

Esta operación mental de significado se llama implicatura, la cual es independiente de las estructuras lingüísticas y depende del contexto. No está en las palabras, pero son inducidas por ellas, lo que nos da una idea del papel que tienen las implicaturas junto con las inferencias en la comunicación lingüística y su papel para comprender cómo se usa el lenguaje en acción social (Reyes, op.cit. 1994).

This mental operation of meaning is called implicature, which is independent of linguistic structures and depends on context. It is not in the words, but they are induced by them, which gives us an idea of the role that implicatures along with inferences have in linguistic communication and their role in understanding how language is used in social action (Reyes, op. cit. 1994).

Siempre habrá contenidos que no están expresados directamente en el enunciado (lo que no se dice), pero también decimos lo que no nos propusimos decir (lo dicho sin querer). Lo que decimos sin querer es extralingüístico, pertenece a la cantidad inmensa de equívocos, malas interpretaciones, suposiciones infructuosas, los lapsus linguae, no necesariamente provenientes de lo lingüístico.

There will always be contents that are not expressed directly in the statement (what is not said), but we also say what we did not intend to say (what was said without meaning to). What we say inadvertently is extralinguistic, it belongs to the immense amount of misunderstandings, misinterpretations, fruitless assumptions, lapsus linguae, not necessarily coming from the linguistic.

Es el caso del turista que le pregunta a un transeúnte nativo dónde queda una oficina de correos. Una respuesta sería: “Camine una cuadra, gire a la derecha y en la siguiente esquina continúe unos metros a la izquierda”. Eso es lo que se dice, sin embargo, lo que no dijo en realidad era que había preguntado dónde había un correo y no por dónde se iba.

This is the case of the tourist who asks a native passerby where a post office is. An answer would be: "Walk one block, turn right and at the next corner continue a few meters to the left." That is what is said, however, what he did not actually say was that he had asked where there was a post and not where it was going.

Lo que se dice sin querer se mostraría en la intención con que se pregunta, acompañado con las inferencias adecuadas en cuanto al contexto mostrado: una persona con unos sobres de cartas en la mano, su acento extranjero, tal vez su vestimenta y su aspecto racial. Pero eso no es lo quiere decir cuando inquiere sobre el correo. Lo que dice sin querer es un significado que la pragmática considera no comunicativo lingüísticamente al carecer de intencionalidad.

What is said inadvertently would be shown in the intention with which it is asked, accompanied by the appropriate inferences regarding the context shown: a person with envelopes of letters in hand, his foreign accent, perhaps his clothing and his racial appearance. But that's not what you mean when you inquire about the mail. What he says inadvertently is a meaning that pragmatics considers non-communicative linguistically as it lacks intentionality.

Las diferencias más notables entre los actos de habla que producimos, bien sean orales o escritos y aun gestuales, es que algunos son intencionales y otros no. En este caso la pragmática se centraliza en el análisis de lo que producimos intencionalmente, es decir en lo que queremos decir y en cómo los usuarios comprenden el decir emitido por los otros.

The most notable differences between the speech acts that we produce, whether oral or written or even gestural, is that some are intentional and some are not. In this case, pragmatics is centralized in the analysis of what we intentionally produce, that is, in what we want to say and in how the users understand the saying emitted by others.

En definitiva, es en base a estos principios que la pragmática y los actos de habla indagan sobre las producciones lingüísticas y la interpretación relevante de sus significados. El qué, cómo y cuánto se transmite, fuera de las fronteras del sentido literal de los enunciados, así como la interacción, acuerdos y desacuerdos entre las relaciones entre las estructuras gramaticales, las realizaciones creativas de los hablantes y las codificaciones lingüísticas de las reciprocidades interpersonales.

Ultimately, it is on the basis of these principles that pragmatics and speech acts inquire about linguistic productions and the relevant interpretation of their meanings. The what, how and how much is transmitted, outside the borders of the literal meaning of the sentences, as well as the interaction, agreements and disagreements between the relationships between grammatical structures, the creative achievements of the speakers and the linguistic encodings of interpersonal reciprocities.
