The Pace of Change

The pace of technology and how it continues to disrupt the way we live continues to impress me despite my general tendencies to be open about trying and experimenting with it. I have always gravitated to trying the latest and greatest although I may also have been a delayed adopter in some technologies as I have let others experience them before trying on my own if I am not an avid user of it. For example, my move to Uber took time despite never really enjoying taxis and their experience. Instead, I have always preferred driving myself or other forms of transportation.

I admit that the disruption in transportation has been amazing to experience and a great example of how innovation is coming from traditional business with simple models that are integrated with technology and development. I even spent almost six months last year with only one car in the household given how easy and cost effective it was to use alternatives. It made me even consider a longer term technology solution within the car sharing space but given my geography, little options were available that would make it a better solution than car ownership.

The innovation has continued to amaze me as I had meetings downtown this week and to avoid traffic, I opted to use a mix of Uber and public transportation and despite being in the area only months ago, I can now see the next iteration of disruption. As I walked out of the train station, I started to see dozens of scooters parked and used everywhere. I recall seeing a handful from a local Company last time I was around but this time I was seeing dozens of scooters available to use and being used on the streets and sidewalks.

I also saw how quickly the industry moves as now there were multiple alternatives from different providers including Uber and Lyft. It shows how demand has been met with supply considering the seemingly low cost barrier to entry in the market. From what I heard during the meetings, these are rented by mileage at pennies which make it somewhat cheap to get around fast as it seems they are available at every corner here. While Uber is also at an abundance here with little wait times, traffic is often horrible and these scooters provide an option that is quick and cheap.

Given the weather here where despite already being in Fall we are having high 80 degrees, using these instead of walking is something to think about. Even I considered downloading the app to get from the train station to the venue to avoid the sweat of walking in a suit and tie for a couple of minutes. However, I have never been good with balance and scooters so I avoided the risk, for now. Next time I come down to the city in the Summer, it will definitely be a consideration!

What amazes me is the acceleration of adoption in many of these disruptive technologies. It was only months ago when an Uber was the best solution around the City. Things change quickly and I cannot imagine how difficult it is to compete when innovation clashes with technology. I feel that this is where we are at within Financial Services and the potential of Blockchain. The missing link is mass adoption which I continue to believe is a matter of time to proliferate!

I would probably consider myself to be a late adopter of technology as well. My experience with Uber and such things is similar to yours. It is impressive how these alternative solutions keep popping up. First it was the bike sharing program and now scooters are taking off. It's pretty awesome really. It's great to have low cost, fast and easy solutions.

It takes time for the product to be consumer ready but as soon as they get it right the tech spreads and adapts so fast. Then others take it and drive it on even further.
