Apple Looks Like It's Rotting To The Core

in #business2 years ago (edited)

Hey Jesstechies

I recently watched the summary of the latest Apple keynote, where they announce all their latest products and bask in their epicness. I've been using Apple products for years, and they've given me excellent service, my MacBook, iPhones, iPod and Apple TV. I like many things that Apple have built, but I am by no means blind to their bullshit.

I'm still using an iPhone 7, and I refuse to upgrade until I saw something worth upgrading too, not mindlessly going after some cosmetic upgrade. Since the iPhone 6, I haven't seen much real innovation from the company, and I think the latest keynote showed more about the companies stagnation than innovation.

Since Steve Jobs is no longer around, they've been leveraging the mantra but not producing anything of value and milking the brand for all its worth.

iPhone 11

So the fantastic announcement was the iPhone 11 which people are eating up for no apparent reason. All they did was take the previous iPhone 10

  • Add a wide-angle lens
  • Make a few adjustments to the previous-gen A12 chip and then rename it an A13.
  • Added a new font
  • Bumped up the price
  • Apple TV + for free with shitty exclusive titles
  • Apple Arcade with shitty unique titles

These updates come from a company with near-limitless budgets and the ability to attract the best talent across the world, and this is the best they can do with a year between releases? Seriously?

Apple shifting to a micro-payment model

If anything they've wholly become a marketing company using their devices to lock you into all sorts of additional services that they can charge you for

  • Apple Pay
  • App purchases store
  • In-app purchases
  • Apple Music
  • Apple TV
  • Apple Arcade

They've become a shitty micro-transaction company with a fancy marketing team and design team packing this turd and repackaging it. I know a few Apple fans, and they still rave about this garbage because they see the status the product perceptually gives them and not the fact that they're not getting their money's worth.

They know their hardware isn't the best but they used to make up for it with a really well integrated OS and robust easy to use services that worked well with their hardware. Now it looks like they have run out of ideas for hardware and are waiting to see what other manufacturers do before copying it and applying ti their products.

Since the keynote, we've seen a slight drop in the stock price which could be that investors are looking at Apple and thinking what I am thinking. Each year Apple falls further behind Samsung and Huawei in terms of the hardware and while they can create a marketing storm and branding campaigns that keep them strong in the US and certain regions of the world.

I think their market share will continue to decrease as consumers wake up to this and see they can get a better deal elsewhere.

Apple's business model is built around centralisation and locking you into their ecosystem and while that has worked in the previous technological age in bringing more consumers into the market it won't always work. As we move to break up monopolies with decentralised services we could also see smaller manufacturers and independents start to eat away at their business.

  • You're clearly not the best cellphone manufacturer
  • Yet you want to compete with Netflix, Hulu, Disney and Amazon for on-demand video
  • Yet you want to compete with Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft for casual gamers
  • Yet you want to compete with cryptocurrency and centralised in the payment processing services industry
  • Yet you want to compete with Spotify and YouTube in the music distribution business

I don't think the company is strong enough to compete on all these fronts and as they try to be a jack of all these trades we could see them slip behind further in all these markets.

It's sad to watch this once innovative brand soil itself like this and I'm keen to see how many more years they can repackage the same turd and feed it to their customer base before the company implodes.

Yep - I'll still buy an iPhone probably, but I'm not as excited by their updates as I was in the first years :-) Mine is already more than 5 years old (iPhone6) and as long as it works I don't see the value of buying a new one :D Maybe once I buy it I'll love a newer camera as I use that a lot, but it's not enough reason to buy new. Trying to consume less added to my decision to not buy new as well by the way, not just the lesser level of excitement, but still.

With the phones, I think the whole frenzy to bring out a new one every year is too much and I mean upgrading every 5 or so years seems fine. I'm going to buy a new battery and see how that lasts otherwise its solid

Mostly a marketing ploy and FOMO to upgrade. I swear if it wasn't for crypto I probably would spend but now I'm just looking for new investment opportunities

I don't like apple as a company and as products. I had an early iphone when there were no other options for smartphones but switched to android after that and haven't looked back since. Wouldn't touch them anymore.

I used to be all Nokia back in the day and then switched to iPhone because it worked well with my Mac but other than that there's nothing special about it. I don't see myself upgrading any time soon, not for the prices they charge!

Android devices are by far the better deal.

Apple was better with its older products. I had a Macbook Pro since 2011, before that, macbook from 2004. I had Snow Leopard for the longest time. I recently had to upgrade because the pro died. iMac is from 2015, so I can have Yosemite, because it's the last OS that supports Final Cut Pro 7, and Photoshop CS6. FCPX isn't as good as FCP7. See, older mac products are better than the new ones. If Apple wants to bask in its glory, it need to start doing things like it did back in its glory age. Tablet is totally android though. I'm not an all mac person. And Windows has its uses for certain things I want and need to do.

I still don't get the whole, turn my phone into a camera thing lol I have a camera, a camcorder, I use thos3 for filming and pics. A phone is for making phone calls, wow lol And I got rid of mine haha Back to basics. But I've had people ask me "Then what do you use your phone for?" What a phone was meant to be used for. 😁 Maybe the next gen iphone can iron a shirt.

I totally get you I have a MacBook 2012 and I've upgraded the SSD and the RAM and it runs just fine. While the new one does look pretty nice I see they now don't let you upgrade the parts the way it's built now so you sort of locked into having to buy a new one as time goes by which well is silly to me.

I also have an issue with the software I haven't upgraded my OS since I run a lot of cracked software and its just a mission to deal with the compatibility

I only use my phone to call, IM, steemit and watch videos other than that they could remove all the other features and I would be totally fine lol

Can't they just make a phone with less features, like the ones I want and I'll just pay for that, or like build my own one pick the stuff I want and only pay for those things

Yeah, I'm sure if building your own computer can be done, that building your own phone can also be done. I'm sure someone has a DIY on it somewhere.

I have seen companies trying to build modular devices a friend of mine is also doing it and I think it will be something to consider in the future where devices are made out of all these small blocks and you can just pull the ones you want out and put new ones in

Yes, like lego. Well, not quite like legos, but sort of. Where you select the parts you want and pimp your computer. Disco lights and all if you want. Heck they've got keyboards and mouses with multicoloured lights. Why not?

By the way, what's the plural for computer mouse? The animal mouse plural is mice, but for the computers, is it mouses? To distinguish, or is it mice also?

I've never been a fan of Apple products and their locking the you into the Apple only products and services.

I didn't mind it too much at first I quite enjoyed Apple Music and their Podcast tool in the beginning but now it's getting to be annoying that this is just a blatant upsell to get you to buy more substandard content
