EU approves 3.2 billion euro state aid for battery research (Reuters)

  • The European Commission has approved €3.2bn of state aid from seven EU countries (Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden) to support research and innovation in battery technology.
  • This is expected to unlock an additional €5bn of private investments, with the completion of the overall project scheduled for 2031.

Analysis and Comments

  • What is interesting is that this is a coordinated research project so that new battery technologies are adopted quickly by companies in their respective end markets.
  • In this project chemical companies (BASF and Solvay) which are innovating in new battery chemistries (for the cathode and the electrolyte) are partnered with:
  1. utilities (Enel) for bulk scale storage,
  2. Automotive OEMs (BMW) for medium size high energy dense batteries and
  3. micro battery maker Varta for high value high power and energy batteries.
  • For the European automotive OEMs a head start in battery technology might be necessary in the long term considering that the Chinese OEMs now control the incumbent lithium ion value chain.

Oh good.

I totally think our battery technology has not advanced as much as other energy consumptive devices that rolled out.
