MSI Infinite X: My Review

So, I just received my MSI Infinite X desktop in the mail today. Decided I'd do a little review on it.

First let's dip into the specs. The specifications of the Infinite X are impressive. You've got at least an Intel Core i7-9700 CPU, RTX 2070 GPU, and 16 GB of RAM. That makes for an impressive gaming rig. If you have a little more cash to splash, there are even more powerful configurations available with the range-topper rocking a CPU that can be overclocked. I've listed the specs below.

Form factor: Desktop
Processor: Up to 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9700K
Graphics: Up to RTX 2080 Ti
RAM: 16GB DDR4 / 64GB Max
Storage: 256GB M.2 SSD + 2 TB HDD
PSU: 550W Bronze
Cooling: Liquid Cooled + Seperate GPU, CPU, PSU compartments
Wireless: Intel AC3168
Bluetooth: 4.2 (optional)
Ports: 1x USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C
5x USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-A
3x USB 2.0
1x DisplayPort
1x HDMI
5x Audio interface
1x LAN
1x S/PDIF
1x PS/2
Size: 8.2 inches x 17.7 inches x 19.2 inches
(210 x 450 x 488 mm)
OS: Windows 10 Professional
Weight: 33 lb (15 kg)
Base Price: $1699

This MSI desktop is equipped with a custom all-in-one liquid CPU cooler, which can offer lower temperatures and has a customizable LED-lit dragon logo on it. Moreover, the case is split into three chambers, separating the CPU, GPU, and PSU for more efficient cooling. MSI makes a big deal about its compartment design, which is said to reduce the amount of heat accumulated within the chassis. The PSU has its own area, as does the GPU, and the remaining components all enjoy plenty of space and cooling capacity. If you're doing a CPU-intensive task, the GPU shouldn't heat up much and vice-versa. It all seems to work just fine as I didn't experience any throttling and that's only with two case fans.

The Infinite X also comes packaged with some pretty nice peripherals (keyboard + mouse). The keyboard isn’t mechanical and the backlight can’t be modified (however the brightness can be adjusted), but it does look and feel better than most included keyboards. The same goes for a mouse. Unless you’re into highly competitive eSports games and need a very precise mouse, the included one will work great for nearly everyone else.

The Aesthetic

MSI decided on a "gaming look" without getting too crazy with it. Like their laptops, the company doesn't make the designs of components and other gamer gear too obnoxious. Looking at the Infinite X, you can tell it's a gaming machine, but not one that looks at all tacky. It features some sharp angles and some odd shape-age, but again, nothing too over the top.

On the front panel I/O, you get headphone and microphone ports, a USB-C port, a USB 3.0 port, and a USB 2.0 port. Next to this is a large illuminated power button. You will also find a, what now seems retro, a CD/DVD drive on the front. For what it’s worth, I would gladly have done without this as I can't even remember the last time I used a disc. That small bit of money invested in a disc drive could have been put somewhere else. Finally, there is a glossy MSI logo on the bottom right corner as well.

On the rear side of the case we find a carrying handle. It feels pretty solid and I had no fears when using it. Below that is the rear I/O. We have 1 HDMI, 1 HDMI 1.4, 3 DisplayPort, and 1 DisplayPort 1.2 inputs for the built in graphics, 10Gbps USB 3.1 Type A and Type C ports, four more USB 3.0 ports, a gigabit ethernet port, and the standard six connector audio setup that all motherboards have.

Overall, it's a great-looking piece. There are even enough RGBs included for maximum gamer effect and a solid carry handle for transporting the desktop to LAN events or wherever else you want to haul it.

The chassis features plenty of vents to allow for enough air to pass through the case and cool the internals. It stands at a slight backwards leaning angle to allow for proper airflow underneath. The side panel can be switched out for with a tempered glass window that comes included with the desktop. If you're all about aesthetic and showing off the internals, it's a nice upgrade and adds a bit more pizzazz to an already excellent design.

Who should buy this desktop?

If you want to get the most bang for your buck, you're going to want to build your own PC (duh), but for those who don't know how or wouldn't mind having a system that has been tested and comes with a manufacturer warranty, the Infinite X is an excellent choice. I have yet to find any real negatives with the machine. But, I'm sure I will in time, as usually is the case. However, for now, A+ machine. I love it!

Support Me & My Charity

If you'd like to help support me, any donations in Steem or SBD are GREATLY appreciated. 50% of donations go to a small personal charity project I started less than a year ago. I buy and restore lower end computers using various Linux distro's to give to less fortunate kids and families (I have given away 7 to-date!).
