Are You Excited for Hive's 1st #Hackathon Event?

It was in October 2019 when I first joined my first hackathon event in Manila, Philippines. I remember the excitement of the two day event held in Araneta Cubao Coliseum in Quezon City. I still feel the exhilaration I had seeing the entire building packed with multitudes of people all wanting to be part of the National event in the Philippines. It was quite a challenge just finding my team from the hundreds of participating groups all stationed in the middle of the building. It made me think of a battle arena that's focused on solving the national problems faced by the Philippines using applications that can automate, use AI, or maybe RPA technology. It was quite an amazing experience, which I am glad I did not miss.

I have been wanting to see something similar happen in the blockchain community, and so I was pleasantly surprised to see the post of @themarkymark encouraging computer programmers, software developers, graphics and interface designers, project managers, domain experts, and others to collaborate intensively on Hive related software projects. I am definitely excited to see innovative projects come out from this event, especially something that will make users experience on Hive more enjoyable and engaging.

Top 3 Recommendations for Hive Hackathon

It was also in October 2019 when I first joined the Hive community, and even back then I realized that from a Hive new user perspective there are many opportunities to consider solving. Here are my top 3 recommendations for this year's Hive Hackathon Event.

  • Getting a Hive Account is Too Complicated | Unlike most social media platforms or applications that the public is familiar with where registration is as easy as clicking a button to link your Facebook, Google, or Microsoft Account getting a Hive Account is amazingly complicated. And the many ways to register to the blockchain is not at all helping but can be confusing to users who are not too tech savvy.
  • There Are Too Many Passwords | It will take a bit of getting used to, but in Hive one has to manage at least 4 passwords - Posting, Active, Memo, Owner. These passwords are also called keys as they do specific functions that are unique to each other. I do like having all four keys work independently from each other and that does add another layer of security that makes the blockchain highly secured from malicious intentions. However, having too many passwords to manage can make new users feel overwhelmed enough to repel them from even using the platform. I feel that retaining this feature is important, but more for advance users, and for new users, there has to be an easier way to manage security - how about using authenticator apps? Maybe even biometric security scans?
  • No Block and Filter Features | Just check out my last post where I had to rant about my experience here. I feel that individual users should at least have the capability to block or filter unwanted users from their page. There are many reasons why this is important, for one - in the event that you're cyber-bullied, how do you protect yourself from them. I get that this is counter to the core principles of decentralization and free speech, but at some level - individuals should also have their privacy respected - and so therefore, users should have the right to choose who they want to engage with on their page or posts. There has to be a way to block unwanted users.

Prize at Stake

This hackathon runs for 2 weeks and will end on May 16th, 2020 at 10:00 AM UTC, and projects can be anything that benefits the Hive ecosystem. Should your project win 1st Place then you'll get 50% of the Reward Pool which is sent to @prizepool. 2nd Place, and 3rd Place Winners will get 30% and 20% of the reward pool respectively.

The current reward pool is at 12,000 Hive as of this writing and is still increasing as more and more sponsors donate in the effort of making this hackathon initiative a success.

Here are the breakdown of donations so far.

Also, if you want to add more traction to this initiative. Please consider promoting the project on your post and online by using the tag #hackathon and you may receive upvotes on your posts.

Participant Reminders and Rules

If you and your team are participating then you are free to keep your project secret until the deadline. Your project must be publicly revealed prior to the end of the deadline to be eligible.

@themarkymark have created a #hackathon-discussion channel on the STEMGeeks Discord. Should you have questions or concerns relating to the initiative.

There are some rules that must be followed to be eligible. These rules will be strictly enforced, with no exceptions. So participants must plan accordingly.

  1. All projects must be open source and provide a public repo.
  2. All projects must be unique and your own work, you are free to use only open source elements and your own code to build your project.
  3. Any third-party code/libraries used should be mentioned in your entry.
  4. Your project must be exclusive to Hive.
  5. Your project must be new and have started after the release of this post.
  6. You can work in teams and I can split the prize between team members if requested.
  7. The deadline is firm and submitting your entry even a second later will disqualify you. Pay attention to the deadline and plan accordingly.
  8. You must submit a post with your entry in the #hackathon-entries channel in the STEMGeeks Discord. Please use this channel only for submitting entries.

As a participant, it is advised that you do not overly concern yourself with design and aesthetics, the most important thing is how useful your project is to the Hive community. Design and aesthetics can be added later. That being said, good design and aesthetics may impact your score.

If you don't have design and aesthetics, make sure your usability and creativity make up for it.

You can use the Hive Brand Assets to help with color palette and logos.

On the first point I'd love to see a standardized way of putting keys into something like Hive Keychain and Hivesigner right at the point of sign up with a way to print out and save the master password.

Also the exact name for the master password should be set in stone and all interfaces encouraged to call it the same thing!!!!

Really pleased to see dev activity like this kicking off.

Me too. I am so glad there is so much activity going on to encourage developers, designers, project managers to really participate. I am really excited to see the result of this hackathon. Yes, I like how the keychains are making users experience more convenient. Honestly, I am giddy for the future of Hive. It seem to be very bright! 😍
