A greener bitcoin?
(Edited)
The traditional Bitcoin model relies on 'consensus' to guarantee the security of the transactions. It assumes that everyone in the distributed system is a suspect until proven innocent.
What if we assume everyone in the distributed system is innocent until proven guilty and design a different model?
That is exactly what the researchers from the Technical University of Munich, Germany have done. Labelled Byzantine Reliable Broadcast, the new system does not require a 'consensus' but just needs to prevent malicious behavior when it presents itself and it does so by simply ignoring the malicious player.
This system allows for secure cryptocurrency transactions on a large scale at virtually zero energy cost.
