AZL Book: Electrical Math - Thevenin Equivalent Circuits

Long story short, Thevenin’s theorem allows you to boil a complicated circuit down to a simple one. Short story long, see here.

To be honest, this one I thought was fascinating when I was in school. I figured I’d use it all the time. Turns out, after 6 years in the field, I’ve used it not one single time. Probably has something to do with the job I’m here to do though too. I design and build electronic systems, but I don’t design circuit level components. So I mostly just source hardware and find the right parts and combine them to do what I need to do. There have been some opportunities to create custom circuitry, like recently when I published my Wide Range Digital Input circuit blocks, but these occasions have been few and far between for me.

While there have been many times I could have (and wanted to) design and build my own custom solution, when you’re manufacturing customer deliverables and safety critical equipment, commercial off the shelf (COTS) components are really pushed. Any custom circuitry I have developed over the years has had to be inspected by someone qualified to gauge their safety and effectiveness according to NFPA, CSA, or both standards…while COTS parts come with certifications of compliance. It ends up being a lesser liability, even if a custom job could have been made that was a more direct fit to the given application.

If you’d like to learn more about Thevenin equivalent circuits, there are definitely resources out there, beyond the link I provided above.

Thanks for checking out some more of my work! As always, I hope you enjoyed witnessing as much as I enjoyed creating!
