Why the Sudden Demand For Artificial Intelligence

In my last post, I was able to give a simpler explanation to the blockchain and how it works, if you missed that post, you can check by blog for [Blockchain 101: In the Beginning of Blockchain (Blockchain Fundamentals)] (). Today I want to throw a very simple question which is Why the Sudden Demand For Artificial Intelligence

A lot of people do not even know what artificial intelligence is, so many use AI without knowing that they are using Artificial intelligence. So I will be giving a very simple explanation to Artificial intelligence after which I will be throwing my question.
Artificial intelligence is not typically new, it is the development of machines to be able to read data and perform tasks which meant to be performed by humans. What makes Artificial Intelligence (AI) unique is that it has the ability to improve itself on whatever purpose it functions.

In 1950, Alan Turing published a paper speculating about a machine that can think. In 1951, Ferranti Mark 1 machine was introduced by Christopher Strachey to compete with humans in playing chess. Artificial intelligence was first coined by John Mccarthy in 1956, he said in quote

Every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to stimulate it. An attempt will be made to find how to make machines use language, form abstraction and concepts, solve kinds of problems now reserved for humans, and improve themselves”

Artificial Intelligence is programing a computer to work and stimulate with higher functions of the human brain, use general language, measure problem complexity, as well improve itself by continuously learning new things, to solve human problems that cannot be solved easily by humans.

Why the Sudden Demand For Artificial Intelligence

A lot of startups, big companies as well as government agencies all of a sudden have been investing heavily into Artificial Intelligent researches. Companies like Google Uses Artificial intelligence (AI) for their search engine, JP Morgan uses artificial intelligence for their Chase contract intelligence platform, IBM is not left behind as Artificial intelligence is used for medical diagnoses called IBM Watson. Social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram uses Artificial intelligence. Tesla taking a front role in using artificial intelligence for self-driving cars.

Computation power, large data, Effective algorithms, as well as enough financial support is available for the improvement of Artificial intelligence and at the same time the above use cases of AI and more is getting on the increase and I want to hear your opinion to why Artificial intelligence is taking such a great spike within one century of its presence. Why has AI gained so much importance, why is it the talk of the century and what could be its possible harm?

Artificial intelligence is not typically new

But the hardware and software solutions have now the necessary capabilities to make good AI solutions. Computing power, memory, big databases etc. (As far as I know.)

Why the Sudden Demand For Artificial Intelligence

In many developed countries there are less and less employees, societies are aging and wages surging. The AI helps to reduce the number of well-paid workforce in many terrains.

Will this not make the rate of unemployment increase drastically?

Also, new professions and jobs can be created. Allegedly, many of the actual children will work in professions which don't even exist today.
Professions which didn't exist 30 years ago: Web-developer, blogger, blockchain programmer, mobile phone vendor, computer mechanic, full-time Youtuber... Also shared services centers were small and local. Writers, journalists, translators used mostly typewriters.

But, yes, if the AI gains terrain too quickly, it can cause temporal surge in unemployment and heavy social-poitical tensions. One solution is universal, unconditional basic income:

Basic income
Basic income, also called universal basic income (UBI), citizen's income, citizen's basic income in the United Kingdom, basic income guarantee in the United States and Canada, or basic living stipend or guaranteed annual income or universal demogrant, is a governmental public program for a periodic payment delivered to all on an individual basis without means test or work requirement. The incomes would be:

Unconditional: A basic income would vary with age, but with no other conditions. Everyone of the same age would receive the same basic income, whatever their gender, employment status, family structure, contribution to society, housing costs, or anything else.
Automatic: Someone's basic income would be automatically paid weekly or monthly into a bank account or similar.

Actually you are right, several professions that never existed in the past has started to come up. Even in the programming world, there are now different categories of programming which has created different job in the space unlike before where programmers were just programmers. Also, jobs like social media influencers, YouTube content creator and so on were not available in the past but are currently available.

Hi @futurekr

Okay, my point of view is.

The man in the incessant search of his own evolution is giving way giants to meet his own needs to create tools that facilitate daily life is a constant in that same evolution, the demand for that same artificial intelligence is being very accelerated by all the facilities that lends to man and every time things come out that make life easier we will be more demanding of it.

Saludos.

One big reason why so many big organizations and startups are investing in AI is this: they want to cut labor and production costs. Think of how much costs AI robots will reduce in a car-assembly line. The amount of staff that would have done those jobs is quite expensive.

I guess AI is the evolution of automation. Previously, information was kept in notebooks, ledgers, sheets, folders and file cabinets, remember the typewriter?. With the emergence of personal computers and networks, information systems, word processors, spreadsheets and databases appeared. All this automation to facilitate and accelerate the handling of information. That's why I think AI is the next step in evolution. The Internet and globalization have created an ocean of information and we need a tool to help us automate it. What for? Why?: Laziness? Business? Skynet? Or from Gene Roddenberry's point of view, to take us to the final frontier?

Time will tell...

Thanks for sharing ^_^
