My review & demonstration of the biggest new features in Android 11:

This is a pretty short one, but lots of information nonetheless.

Android 11 is the first release to drop the desert-naming convention:

  • 1.0 No codename
  • 1.5 Cucake
  • 1.6 Donut
  • 2.0 Eclair
  • 2.2 Froyo
  • 2.3 Gingerbread
  • 3.0 Honeycomb
  • 4.1 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 4.4 Kitkat
  • 5.0 Lolipop
  • 6.0 Marshmallow
  • 7.0 Nougat
  • 8.0 Oreo
  • 9.0 Pie
  • 10.0 Queenscake

Behhind The Scenes Changes to Android:

The issue:

One of the biggest issues with Android in the past has been fragmentation. Unlike iOS which pushes new releases directly to all of Apple's iPhone/iPad/Apple Watches, Android releases are more complicated because of so many different types of phones/devices.

It begins with Google's modifications to the Linux Kernel for the official Android image, and then it requires specific SoC(System on a Chip) drivers from the chip manufacturers such as Samsung, Qualcomm, Rockchip, etc. Then the phone manufacturers make their changes: Sony, Samsung, Huawei, HTC, ZTE, Xaiomi, OnePlus, and the final stage may or may not be the cellular provider's changes: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, MetroPCS, etc.

Google Nexus & Pixel:

Google originally addressed this by releasing their own phones from different manufacturers via the Nexus branded line, but has since began their own phone division in partnership with HTC branded as the Pixel line. Where they could release their version of Android without any 3rd party modifications. This didn't address the issues with the vast amount of phones sold through other companies.

Project Treble:

With Android 8 we saw the beginning of Project Treble which separated
Android's core framework released by Google from hardware-focused modifications from companies like Samsung,Qualcomm, LG, etc.

Project Mainline:

Project Mainline began with Android 10: Queenscake, and took core components of the Android Framework and made them modular parts that can be released directly from Google via the Play Store. The Play Store ships apps as APK(Android Package) files, but Project Mainline modules are shipped via a new file type: APEX(Android Pony Express) files.

Android 11 doubles the amount of Android Mainline modules including:

  • NNAPI Neural Network API
  • Statsd Statistics Daemon
  • ADBD Android Debug Bridge Daemon
  • Cell Broadcast
  • Some WiFi Modules
  • SDK Extension Modules
  • Media Provider

Android 11 User-Facing Features:

Features that you can actually check out and use in Android 11 include:

  • Airplane mode no longer disconnects Bluetooth Audio devices.
  • Media controls are now added to the Notification Center Tools:

  • Now apps that support Picture in Picture can be resized

  • Grouped messaging app notifications into "Conversations" category.

    • All messages get placed in a specific area of your notifications called "conversations", and are more prominent and easier to reply to.
  • Bubbles for any messaging apps, even for specific apps or convos.

    • And they stack in the same bubble together for FB Messenger, Text, etc.
  • Built in screen-recorder /w microphone or internal audio capture or both.

    • When I got my first Android phone: the Sony Xperia Z3, it had built-in screen recording with a long-press of the power-button. When I moved to a Google Pixel I found out that was Sony modification.
    • Now all Android phones will have a screen-recorder option in the Notification Center Tools.
    • The built-in Screen Recorder allows you to record audio from your microphone, internal-audio, or both at the same time! And presumably this feature will be exposed to 3rd part apps as well.
  • Power button menu now has Smart Home controls

  • Refined app permissions now reset when you don't use them for a long time.

  • Android 11 Easter Egg is a Volume Nob app that goes to 11. A reference from the cult-classic film "This Is Spinal Tap".

  • Notification history for 24 hours

  • You can pin apps to the share menu

  • Voice control is improved for Google Assistant

  • Support for wireless Android Auto

  • Better support for playing content at different refresh rates

  • Pixel Only

    • Pixel Launcher automatically selects your 5 home screen apps for you based on how well it knows you.

    • Multitasking menu has screen capture plus the ability to copy specific text from anywhere on screen.

    • AR Indication of shared locations
