Banana rachis leachate, ecological alternative to fertilize.

in #agriculturelast year
Dear readers, today in some countries to purchase chemical fertilizers have a high cost, our country Venezuela does not escape from this reality by the economic situation by which crosses, in the area south of lake Maracaibo, there are large tracts of land sown with the cultivation of banana and among the products of higher costs are the fertilizers they use, which has led to look for alternatives agroecological that allows to balance the costs and of course the ecosystem, in that search they began to use the rachis of the banana cluster to make a fermented organic product that is used as a fertilizer and according to some research and empirical experiences of producers it is efficient to maintain the development, growth and yield of crops.

The product made with this part of the plant, is called rachis Leachate, whose elaboration process will be explained later, but for now, it is important to mention that it is an organic product that comes from plant residues generated at the time of harvesting the banana bunch, said fertilizer applied to the soil can provide some nutritional elements and organic matter, for this reason the main strategy is to organically nourish the soil to ensure the nutrition of the plants, it is clear that a biologically balanced soil with high fertility, it produces healthy and productive plants.

In this same order of ideas, and by virtue of the great benefits offered by organic fertilizers, they can be a possible solution to guarantee the availability of nutrients in the soil since it naturally promotes the growth, flowering, fruiting and maturation of cultivated plants and increases the efficiency of organic matter. The effects of this management allows to optimize the benefits of all sources of nutrients from the production unit, and its supplementation with external sources that are necessary to satisfy the requirements of the crop, all this is aimed at achieving desired production levels and reducing risks of environmental degradation.

Next, it is explained in a brief and simple way how the banana rachis leachate is made.

First of all, the following materials should be located:

  • Rachis of bananas, or also of cambur.
  • Container or tank with a capacity of 200 liters.
  • Machete or any tool with an edge that serves to cut the rachis
For the processing proceeds to cut the stalk of bananas collected in small pieces of about 5 cm, then placed in the container until they are completely full, the spine will begin to drain the liquid that is found inside, the liquid will start to store in the bottom of the container, then place the lid of the container between open to allow the entry of air and let it ferment aerobically until the smell starts to fade away. Finally, the preparation should be placed in a shady place at room temperature.

For its application, in case of using a sprinkler with a capacity of 20 liters, 20 liters of water and 0.1 ml of plantain rachis leachate can be added; in the case of wanting to prepare for 1 hectare, 1 liter of rachis leachate can be applied in 200 liters of water.

Final considerations
Dear readers, this type of liquid organic fertilizers are substances that are obtained from the fermentation process of organic matter of animal or vegetable origin, which provide some nutritional elements that plants need and also help the life of organisms that are generated in the soil. These bioferments could also be used to control the incidence of pests in crops, since some microorganisms present in the ferments compete with pathogens, also collaborating in the prevention of pathogens in plants.

Indeed banana rachis are good for fertilizing it! And since in tropical countries in South America, banana is a plant that is everywhere and grows everywhere is a good way to use it!

Hello dear @gwajnberg, you are absolutely right it has a lot of potential in tropical regions because it is a very propagated crop and being able to use said part of the plant after harvest, is a great agroecological alternative that enhances the recycling of nutrients in the system.

So long, have a great week.
