The creation of new technology

New technology always comes with a mixture of skepticism, confusion and to an extent, fear. It’s no news that the moment one new technology comes out, something has to be phased out in return for creating a kind of balance.

We’ve seen it happen a lot over the years but this year has been one of the most remarkable that I’ve been conscious enough to notice and follow up with due to how much it has affected my work life.

I’m still licking my wounds from losing my Technical Writing career just when it was beginning to gain some roots. The presence of Chat GPT did a major number on me and since its launch, I haven’t received a single gig from any of my clients. It started slow but now I know there’s no turning back.

As Apple launched the Vision Pro, I’ve been on the lookout for what could get phased out and I can’t exactly think of any particular thing. The relevance of these AR headsets and technology as a whole is often limited, in my understanding, by their ability to replace anything.

I’ve considered the possibility of laptops, televisions and other screens being replaced by AR glasses but I just don’t see that happening anytime soon. They’re too advanced and relevant right now to be replaced by a weighty head technology that doesn’t have a long battery life.

The only benefit I can see with this new AR tech is the creation of some new jobs because a lot of people would want to jump on the new trend and learn quickly how to design for AR and develop software suitable for AR. So more jobs will get on the market and a lot more skills will become in demand.

I don’t know yet if I’ll be getting on the bandwagon to learn how to design for this, but in the meantime, I’m just watching to see how it all looks over the next 1 year. My bet is on it phasing out slowly due to limited sales but I guess we can keep our fingers crossed for the best.
