My aim was to pack a huge amount of information into a single post. I am glad that you found pieces of it useful.

The languages FORTRAN, COBOL and BASIC were similar in form but addressed different markets. The C language is pretty much as straight up wrapper for assembler (aka object code) and can be used in all three scenarios.
